The Fine Wine Delivery Company had its modest beginning from our home on Auckland’s North Shore over 10-years ago. • In 1976, Amerine and Roessler ( U.C. Davis professors) counseled tasters to avoid emotive and anthropomorphic terms such big, finesse, hard, intense, lingering, long, rich, silky and velvety.  They stated in their book "Wines, Their Sensory Evaluation" that these words should be avoided at all costs.  How does the forum feel of this? • I'm curious: Do you order half bottles in restaurants, or ever purchase them for home consumption? I've started to notice them cropping up more frequently in my area (a wine bar just opened in my neighborhood that boasts a half-bottle option for nearly every wine on their list) -- and yet I always feel the urge to either order by the glass, or c... • Not, I repeat not, a thread about whether the 2009 Bordeaux is great, but more about whether you trust the reviews. After the 2009 en primeur week, the opinion is unsurprisingly about a brilliant "vintage of the decade". I think this is the 3rd in the last 10 years n'est-ce-pas? So do we need to review how we review the en primeur? Do you trust ... Read More

  • This article does a good job informing us about the business of wine production in California. California wine-making country is on the decline and suffers from tighter margins.  There are quite a few wine-makers which were unable to weather the financial stress of 2008-2009 and are now defaulting, leading to distressed property values in the ar... • I meet regularly with a particular group of people. I usually provide the beverages and snacks. I have been bringing different wines and after dinner liqueurs. I am trying to get my March "menu" set. I was thinking of getting some grappa. I have never tasted grappa myself and am unsure of it's properties, what to shop for and what it might ... Read More

  • Hi, I am hosting a varietal wine tasting for 6 people. This is my first, I'm a total newbie as are all my guests. I'm wondering how many different labels I should have in my tasting and then how many bottles of each for six people. This will be a blind tasting and I want to throw in a Merlot or other varietal to shake things up. Also, this n... Read More

While staying in Seville, my wife and I did a day trip to Jerez and went to the Tio Pepe Bodega: great experience, they have been making Sherry there since 1835! • I am always impressed with how some people, mostly real wine experts have learned to pick out many specific flavors in a wine. Once in a while a specific flavor jumps out at me, which is sometimes good, sometimes bad. I remember in France, they would sell these kits with maybe 50 or more bottles, each containing different important smells to he... Read More
