Tom is "retired" from a 30+ year career as a software engineer, manager and executive, while Marie's background is in special education. We share a love of fine wine and fine wood art. Integrating that with Tom's lifelong love of woodworking, software, internet and CAD/CAM technologies, we have found the art of wine barrel carving a great combination of the old and new, of artisanship and technology.
Decorative hand carvings of wine barrels and casks began as a German folk art and spread across the old world. It was very common for prestigious wineries to have many beautifully carved barrels and barrel heads on display in their barrel rooms, tasting rooms and cellars. Some of these honored the vintner or Bacchus, others displayed landscapes or scenes of grapes or wildlife, while others commemorated particularly notable vintages.
Today there are still a few individuals producing hand-carved barrels. We respect and honor the style and technique of these artisans, but we also believe there is great benefit to leveraging modern technology to make these works of art more accessible and affordable - and to put the design process firmly in the hands of the owner.
We also believe the first and best use of a used wine barrel is to unlock the inner beauty of the oak with a beautifully finished carving of a unique composition of landscapes, icons, flourishes, and/or text and graphics of your choosing.
Living where we do, we get a lot of inspiration as well as a ready supply of used wine barrels and a very receptive local market. Many of our early customers are local area vinters, some of whose testimonials can be read on the Gallery page. Like these customers (and probably like you) we prize having beautiful, one-of-a-kind things of high quality and craftsmanship around us. We love to design, or at least actively participate in the design of these things. ...and frankly, we savor the compliments and enjoyment of family, friends, customers and visitors when they delight in the beautiful things we've created.
