There are not a lot of businesses as old as ours, and fewer still in the wine trade! El Vino, then known as Bower and Co, was founded in 1879, not 25 years after the industry was revolutionised by the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, and in the intervening years has become an integral part of the City of London and a strong influence on the development of the UK wine market. Our 128th year sees us still going strong with five ever-popular wine-bars in the City and a host of loyal customers, now enjoying a broader range of wines than ever! It was in 1879, when Queen Victoria was on the throne, and horses ruled the road, when Alfred Louis Bower set himself up as a wine merchant on Mark Lane, on the eastern side of the City of London. While the ruling powers of Europe squabbled over ownership of acres of barren desert in Africa, Alfred Bower paid attention only to what was taking place closer to home, specifically the fertile soils of France and Spain. What I did not think of was the region Cariñena in Spain’s province of Aragon. Why is that? It’s a good question, and one I resolved while visiting the region briefly early last month. Cariñena the region doesn’t jum... Read More

  • Marques de Riscal Rioja 150th Anniversary Gran Reserva Case of 6 Bottles 2004

    Snoothrank:

Read More

  • A To Z Pinot Gris 2007

    Snoothrank:

Read More

  • Here I am trying to think of my "Wine of The Year" as well as the runner ups.  I see a lot of forums do this, but it's usually a bunch of impossible to obtain bottles or vintage wines that cost too much for the average person to afford. I find these lists pretty useless, since the best use that anyone could get from a topic like this, is to find... Read More

  • I heard somewhere that white wines should be stored at the bottom of the home wine rack rather than at the top. Supposedly whites like it cooler (the old heat rises, cold falls theory), Now I know that wine's enemy is heat and changing temperatures, My wine rack is a 44 bottle system which stands about 4 feet high and I do keep the whites on the... • Intriga Cabernet Sauvignon -Maipo Chile 2006

    Snoothrank:
