  • What do you drink when you're not drinking wine? We've posed this question to winemakers and wine lovers, wine directors and store owners -- and the answer always arrives with a bit of a crooked smile. The vintners love beer, the retailers tell stories of ghostly green absinthe, of vodka made in airplane hangars. And our readers, well: Our read... Read More

  • ok peeps i have a wine that did it for me that made me want more of it.  it was Foppiano 1993 Petite Syrah.  What was yours? was't much of a wine guy and this changed me forever. i recently came upon a merchant who had 4 bottles on hand. i can only hope it is still in good shape and that it still has the charm it had when it first hoo... • What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle.  Has anyone else tried it? Read More

  • Recently tried Esser Zinfandel American Canyon Napa County-2005 at just under $8 a bottle.  Great "cheap" Zin.  I would love to hear from others about this or your favorite under $10 bottle.   Read More

  • 2005 Barolo has the grave misfortune of living between two highly-regarded vintages, so that means you shouldn’t be buying these wines, right? Well, hold on there just a second.  On the first hand, vintage assessments never really tell the whole story, and on the second, well, these wines might just end up getting dumped at a discount so they mi... • Hey everyone, what's the buzz in the US right now about buying Bordeaux 2009 En Primeur?I have never known a vintage to be so 'talked-up' by the press.  Investors are hanging on to Parker's index fingers waiting with drooling tongues and wagging tails for it to spout forth its Midas touch.  This is THE vintage of the last 100 years folks.  Broke... • So this past Friday, I hosted a tasting of sauvignon blanc.  I tried to show the most popular areas, taking into account readily available options for most shoppers.  I hit the major producing areas, except for South Africa. All in all, New Zealand won out as they always are a favorite of mine and the rest of the "panel" agreed, finding them to ... • This article does a good job informing us about the business of wine production in California. California wine-making country is on the decline and suffers from tighter margins.  There are quite a few wine-makers which were unable to weather the financial stress of 2008-2009 and are now defaulting, leading to distressed property values in the ar... • Latour a Pomerol 1998

    Snoothrank:

A friend ask me once if he should purchase some of the Latour 1998. My first answer was no, but after the seller gave him an extra discount on the wine, he thought at this price, there's no harm. So, last night, he kindly brought a bottle for us to try and even though this was not the finest Latour ever made, I have once again realise, that with... Read More
