Read moreFor CA Snoothers ... I just got the following email content from Siduri Wines & Novy Family Winery. It is a he** of a deal all bottles are $16.21 in the honor of the first thanksgiving. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 in Plymouth, MA with 53 Pilgrims in attendance along with a group of Native Americans (led by King Massasoit). Appropriately, the only two written accounts of this celebration begin with references to “our harvest being gotten in…..” We, too, have brought in our harvest and have now spent some time sorting thru our wine cellar, discovering several wines that we have 14 cases or less still hanging around. So, in celebration of that first Thanksgiving in 1621 we have decided to share our small remaining bounty of these wines with you for only $16.21! There are a couple of stipulations, however, to this offer. First, this offer is good only while supplies last…..the remaining inventory on these items is quite limited so first come, first served. Second, this offer is limited to the wines listed below and these wines only. Third, due to some shipping restrictions (holiday delivery times, etc.) we are anticipating more of an early December delivery date (sorry about that, Thanksgiving wasn't codified as a November holiday until Abraham Lincoln in 1863 - so give us 242 years and we will get the shipping thing figured out).   Welcome Newton. Looks like you might need three different wines. The Squash and ginger soup would work best with a rich, white, maybe some thing from Alsace. The Squash and ginger soup would work best with a rich, white, maybe some thing from Alsace. I would go with a Pinot Gris, many might suggest Gewurtztraminer. The veal shank is one of red wine's best friends. Virtually any wine will work but for my palate I'd suggest an Italian, maybe a Vino Nobile de Montepulciano or nice Nebbiolo. With the pear cake I would look again toward Italy, recioto di Soave for example, though I can see many dessert wines working well with the pears as well. Sauternes, or more likely in my case it's close neighbor, Barsac would be excellent as well. I hope that's enough to get you started!    (hide)

  So a question in one of these threads, or perhaps in a comments thread on one of my articles got me thinking about my favorite varietal wines. Read moreSo a question in one of these threads, or perhaps in a comments thread on one of my articles got me thinking about my favorite varietal wines. First off I will have to group my answer in two parts, noble wines and not noble wines. I am stealing the phrase noble from the wine geek vernacular but as a title it works just fine. So the noble grapes are those that produce the world's finest, most complex, most ageable wines. My top three. 1 - Nebbiolo, now that wasn't a surprise 2 - Syrah, maybe that was more of a surprise 3 - Pinot Noir - Ok let's be real, I'm talking primarily about Burgundy My top three non noble grapes, and the wines I am liable to be drinking most often. 1 - Sangiovese, ok this is a bit of an outlier in the sense that Sangiovese makes some wines that can compete with the worlds best. I drink lots of Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile not because they are the most complex and age worthy wines produced. They're not. What they are are some of the worlds most food friendly wines, at least for the foods I eat! 2 - Zinfandel - Like Sangiovese I don't drink Zin looking for a religious experience, however when I have some spicy foods, a bit of barbeque, plain old burgers or sausages Zin can be the perfect partner. And besides, at the prices I'm paying it's tough to get a more interesting wine in s full throttle fruit forward style. Ok I see an argument coming there! 3 - Barbera - Much like Sangiovese, Barbera just fits the foods I tend to eat. Sangiovese, in all its permutations tends to be much more widely available but I do love the Barbera flavor profile. A sentimental favorite, actually two, are the wines I grew up with; Teroldego and Schiava, heck I'll even throw in Lagrein. I drink them when I can but there are limited choices here in the states.   Zinfandel is a good recommendation. I also find that Sangiovese, Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in particular, offers alot of band for the buck and works very well with simple stews.   Welcome to Snooth! I'm a big fan of Italian wine as well. Last year I felt in love with a region and their wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Corte alla flora produces, to my opinion, the best of the best at a very raisonable price. See you around

Read moreHere is a pretty good explanation: Super Tuscans are the premium wines of the IGT classification. As with most great wine classifications, there's much more to the story. Originally, the term "Super Tuscan" referred to any Tuscan red wine that did not adhere to traditional regional blending laws. Unlike the traditional Toscanas, Super Tuscans blended with other varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon. Because these blends did not conform to the strict DOC(G) classifications, winemakers began labeling their wines "vino da tavola", or "table wine". However, these superb wines were far and above the typical table wine. As such, the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) classification was created where the wine was classified based on region rather than varietal or blend. An IGT Toscana guarantees that at least 85% of the fruit used was sourced from the region. A Super Tuscan is an IGT Toscana that is of a certain premium quality and is often the signature wine from the producer. ie. Ornellaia, Tig, etc    (hide)
