Robin Akhurst is the winemaker for Envy Wines in Calistoga and asst to Mike Smith of Myraid. I met Robin a couple years ago through Mike and really like him and his approach to winemaking. Nice guy, humble, passionate, hard worki... Read More

  • Saw this method in a commercial on the internet and decided to try it.Normally, I slice the top foil to get to the cork then extract the cork. However on this commercial I saw a guy grip the entire upper wrapped portion, twist it and the entire foil sleeve came right off. I decided to try it and viola' it worked, I was pleasantly pleased. Then..... Read More

  • Well, this is clearly overdue....but here we go.DISCLAIMER: This will be much more short-winded than I would have posted otherwise - I had tried to discreetly scrawl down a few notes on the back of a programme..but these notes got picked up by someone else, thinking it was their programme. The notes were limited (very limited) in scope anyway. B... Read More

  • JenniferT,  We had a corked wine we opened last night- typical cork taint smells like musty, dirty, moldy, newspaper or nasty basement.  It was a bottle I purchased two years ago.  I no longer have the receipt, and it was a one time purchase at a winery out of the area.To reiterate for the thousandth time, it is such an utter disappointment, and... • NG, Cork taint happens the moment to cork is put in the bottle. It has nothing to do with provenance so there is absolutely no reason why a winery would not take back a corked bottle regardless of the age on it. Don't ever let the age of a bottle swat you decision on returning it. Be fully aware, though, that you may not get the same vintage in ... Read More

  • It’s the heart of winter here in the northern hemisphere, a time when our attentions turn to robust red wines. One wine in particular seems to be relegated to these cold months, and that is a bit of a shame. I’m talking about the often misunderstood Amarone. A powerful wine, one with relatively high alcohol and rich flavors, but one that often i... Read More

  • Does anybody know anything about this winery?I was in a store today and picked up a bottle of their Cuvee Le Bec--a red Rhone blend.  For some reason or other, I have seen the Backmen name a few times recently, and, now, I have a bottle to try.  Clearly, this is not a wine that has attracted a lot of attention.  I don't hear about anybody claimi... • Liver what? It’s that great wine region you’ve never heard of. Less than an hour from San Francisco. A growing wine scene based on a century and a half of history. Great climate, friendly people, tasting rooms that are not filled to capacity with people you don’t want to be rubbing shoulders with. You know, one of those regions that is truly up ... Read More
