A & Cherry Liquor
The 2008 vintage has reached it's "expiration date". I got this for 75% off at a local liquor store since it expired about a month ago, which means I paid a mere $6 for 4 bottles worth of wine. I was unaware that box wines actually had expiration dat...

Bodegas Frutos Villar, Toro, "Muruve", Crianza, 2006 Production background: 12 months oak, 12 months in bottle. 100% Tempranillo, Toro region, Spain. I gave it "4 stars" over there for its value in particular, along with an overall, "Parker-esque" r...

Some black cherry, pepper, a little earthy on the nose. A little light on the palate at first but opens up with a little time to breathe. Some notes of cherry come through on the palate again, but this is not a fruit forward wine. There's just enoug...

I know what you're thinking: A rose port? But this little gem will change the way you think about fortified wines. This lovely pink port wine is amazing is suprisingly fresh. It has a fruity, floral aroma, a silky texture, and tastes of cherry & raspb...
The Argentinean 'incarnation' of the Malbec grape, with its tighter, smaller berry clusters than the varietal's original French predecessor lends beautifully to making Rose style wine. The Avanti, I think in particular, is a fantastic example of this....

Not exclusively at Trader Joes! I live in Tokyo and found it at my local discount liquor I would say a much better buy with similar flavour is the Usual Suspect red blend. In Japan Gypsy is almost $10 and the Usual Suspect is only $5.50. These wines are very similar. It tastes like Merlot, Cab and Syrah or zin blend. Satisfying, bright, smooth, ... Read More
In a previous posting, I had shared some of the white Rhone-styled wines Australia produces. In this first of 2/3 posts, I'll share my thoughts on the red wines. First up are the wines from New South Wales and South Australia. Basically, Hunter Valley and the Canberra District for NSW, and McLaren Vale, Barossa and Eden Valleys for SA. There was... Read More
Being one of the largest privately owned winery, Scotchman’s Hill is one of the best wine producers of the Bellarine Peninsula, just 30 mins out of Geelong (about 90 mins from Melbourne). It produces quality, cool climate wine but not just with fruit grown off their 250 hectares of largely fertile volcanic soils of black clay with basalt. Their ... Read More
So, I was at a pre-performance dinner before an opera this weekend and a fellow diner/patron told me that her household is in love with a wine named Checkerboard. I've read a little on the interwebs and so far it sounds good. I was wondering if any of you Snoothers had tried this stuff and could provide any feedback. What does it most clearly com... Read More
I was going to put this in the Whatcha Drinking Tonight thread. But since there was some Syrah talk going on I thought I'd start a new thread on Cool Climate Syrah.Tonight I'm visiting a wine I haven't had in since May and wanted to see how it is progressing. It comes from high up atop the Yorkville Highlands in the Anderson Valley which is in ... Read More
The nose was dark and intense with dried cherry, sweet floral notes and balsamic tones. On the palate, it was rich with velvety textures, showing dried black cherry with a sweet-and-sour quality which lasted into the long finish with notes of dark chocolate, cinnamon and cherry liquor. Thought it would be a great idea for us to take part in trading some of our favorite wines to each other this holiday season. Something in the $30 - 40+ range retail sounds about right (best if found at cheaper/cheapest retailer), and the wines should be ready to drink now so we can all post about our impressions of the wines we were given, but ... Coming from the rugged Dolomite Mountains along the border of Austria in North Central Italy, Lagrein is the iconic red grape of Italy’s Alto Adige region. In some ways, the wines are similar to Syrah, though perhaps with a more obvious appeal and richer fruit in youth. At their best, these are medium-bodied and quite fresh, yet at the same time... A bit of raw wood greets the nose here with oaky spice. On the palate, this shows off a little liquor quality to the transparent black cherry and black currant fruit. Turning a touch creamy on the palate, this remains nicely bright and fresh on the finish, which shows more red fruit character. This is a very linear wine, very nicely done. Captur... Read More
