  • Wine south of the equator?  I never imagined...;-)You know, I would get very confused if I had to think of North as being where the sun exposure was for most of the year.  I'm just never going to cross the equator again, just like I'm never gong back to any place where they drive on the left side of the road.  (So Dmcker will have to visit me, n... • Opened another Duckhorn wine last night, this time a 2009 Petit Verdot.  Yes, it was wonderful and of course I had it in a decanter for maybe 15 minutes!  Paired it up with a nice rib-eye steak and artichoke.  This was another Cat Tuesday (check out Kashmire, a Russian Blue) for me so I didn't start grilling until about 7:30 PM under the threat ... • Claudio's 90 day maceration is just a flat out anomaly.  He's trying something very interesting with fruit that fits the bill--going back to the long macerations that used to be the rule out of necessity.  It's a curiosity and he has to charge more because it's such a small production but requires quite a bit of additional attention. There are g... • VV, this was JD's frolic.  We'll do the offline after the new year, I think.  Things are still a little crazy with open houses, bat mitzvah, trials, finishing the basement.  I'll definitely consult the far flung correspondents like you, Vogler, Lucha, and we'll try to get GdP to make a commitment. We will be staying in town for Thanksgiving, tho... • Agreed on Riserva, and non-Riserva. I'm not really as interested in the extra aging or official qualifications, just that if the producer is deciding to bottle a regular and a riserva, the riserva is typically a better, or more highly regarded wine due to the cru, blocks within the cru, barrel select, etc. They all have their story I'm sure, and... • In Piemonte, esp Barolo DOCG, nebbiolo is "only" grown on south facing sites because it is a late ripener and needs the longest growing season.  The rule of thumb is that it's planted in the spots where the snow melts first. so, since we're in the Northern Hemisphere, that means south facing.  As the market for Barolo has taken off, plantings ha... • Thanks for the input, I noticed various people really like the wines, including my friend Tim, so we're you able to try their Riserva? Also, does south facing mean it's a warmer site? That would be pretty incredible if your daughter already has the Chambolle Musigny bug, talk about skipping steps! Yeah they are expensive, but I think a wine like ... Read More

  • JD, my quick take on Cavallotto:  They use rotovinifiers, but are otherwise very traditional.  We walked through Bricco Boschis a lot because our accommodations were right next door.  (The place we stayed is where I thought they should bring in an outside winemaker, if I recall correctly:  It's called Tenuta Montanello and has good land, borderi... • It would have been nice to have a few more folks, since we like to get together with as many of you as we can.  We certainly had enough wine, thanks to JD. I'd say, yes, it's infanticide to drink 04 and 06 Barolo, but I think it drinks well younger, better than it used to, because some of what made it tough was faults in wine making.  Long macer...
