Yakima Valley, within the Columbia Valley district, became Washington State’s first official AVA in 1983. Wine-making in the valley can be traced back to the early days of the pioneers in the 1860s, but its commercial success didn’t hit until much later. In the 1930s, oenologist Dr. Walter Clore of Washington State University Research Center, established experimental vineyards in the valley. In the 1960s, Charles Nagel is credited with starting the Washington Wine Project focusing on Yakima Valley grapes that were grown by Clore. By the early 1980s, Covey Run and Hogue Cellars had achieved commercial success just before the AVA was designated. Today, Yakima Valley has the most concentrated vine plantings in the state, making up a large percentage of its wine production and grape-sourcing.

  • I don't eat red meat, so any vegetarian dishes are good with me.  I like the idea of pizza on the big green egg. :-)I will work on putting together a horizontal from WA to do a comparison of Syrah from different AVAs.  I'm thinking Walla Walla, Yakima and Red Mountain.  Read More

  • Betz la Cote Rousse Syrah Red Mountain 2011

    Snoothrank:

Inky on the nose and rich with aromas of dried herbs, roasted coffee, and almost gamy meat topped with spicy black pepper notes. Another big wine thats underpinned with good acids and fine ripe, polished tannins that lend this a voluptuous texture. Theres lots of tobacco, meat juices, and a bit of brown spice on the powerful palate which reve... Read More

  • Chinook Wines Cabernet Franc Yakima Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Tobacco, smoke, and herb stem aromas wrap around very fresh crushed raspberry fruit on the nose. This so clean, fresh and lusty on entry, its a small scaled wine in many ways, revealing the delicate side of Cabernet Franc with great clarity. Hints of minerality emerge on the palate along with subtle licorice framing notes that help to focus the ... Read More

  • Canoe Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Taylor 2011

    Snoothrank:

Power and complexity on the nose, along with great complexity to the herbal spice, subtle fruit and noticeable backing spice aromas. This is big, rich, and chewy yet soft and supple. A bit low on acid perhaps but with great, transparent red currant and red cherry in a supple style. After an early hint of candied sweetness this turns firm and... Read More

  • Seven Hills Ciel du Cheval 2010

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely deep purple color in the glass with limited opacity. The nose is a lovely blend of green grass, balsamic, cedar and cocoa powder. The taste is quite lovely, with some subtle fruit up front that's enveloped with some complex flavors of anise, lavender and minerality. The finish is long, smooth and with a velvety mouthfeel tha... • Soléna Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Klipsun Vineyard 2008

    Snoothrank:

A bright wine offering aromas of dust, ripe red cherry, dried plum, vanilla and baking spices. By mouth there are bright red fruits, delineated with a dynamic dried cranberry edge, surrounded by spice, celery seed and toasted herb over moderate tannins that trail into a warm, persistent finish. A wash of extreme pleasure coating the mouth with a ... Read More
