Bounded on the north by the ridge of the hills forming the southern border of the Yakima Valley, and on the south by the Columbia River, the 570,000 acre Horse Heaven Hills AVA benefits from its unique location in several ways.

Most vineyards are planted on south-sloping hills above the river, with sandy, well-drained soils. They are whipped almost daily by winds blowing steadily from the west via the Columbia Gorge. The extreme winds reduce the risks of fungal diseases, thicken grape skins and concentrate juices.

Currently, the Horse Heaven Hills AVA includes just five wineries, but one of them, Columbia Crest, is the state’s largest. There are some 6040 acres of wine grapes planted — roughly a fifth of the state’s bearing acreage, and sizeable new plantings continue to go in. This is viewed as one of the most promising, and productive grape growing regions in the entire Columbia valley. Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and especially Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars here, and some of the oldest Cabernet Read more »

  • Columbia Crest Red Blend H3 2011

Nice Red blend from Columbia Crest, Les Chevaux. Deep fruit flavor with currant with deep purple color, almost black. Nice tannins at the end and a finish that is long. A true value everytime for under $10 dollars.Coats the mouth and throat with that fine deep red flavor Read More

  • Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills H3 2012

Nice deep ruby in color. Upon opening, stony nose with blackcurrant and black plum aromas with a stemmy, earthy quality. Hints of bay leaf. On the palate, it has a huge entry with dark flavors of bitter cocoa, espresso, roasted meat, bay leaf, fennel, cassis and a graphite note with a chalky texture. Lingers on black coffee and smoke. It's ... Read More

  • The Expedition Merlot Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2012

Heat and red cherry aromas are sort of a one-track idea but strong and direct. On the palate there's more going on, with loads of fruit flavors and cola. Strident red fruit flavors are powerful and precede a candied finish. If you are looking for an example of a dry wine that carries itself like a sweet one, look no further. Read More

  • Canoe Ridge Vineyards Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, certainly appropriate for a Cabernet from the Columbia Valley. The nose is quite pleasant with some lovely floral notes atop some rich, ripe fruit notes of plum and red currant and just a bit of smokiness. The taste is really quite nice, very fruit forward, with flavors of ripe raspberry, blackberry ... Read More

  • Wildhaven Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Horse Heaven Hills 2012

The 2102 vintage in Wa is highly rated but I am not finding that to be so. This Cabernet is characterized by chocolate and spice with moderate complexity but surely not like the 2009 vintage. Enjoyable but not profound. My rating -- 88 Read More
