for this region?

Walla Walla is a wine region within Columbia Valley that straddles both Oregon and Washington. Wine-making began in the mid-1800s, when an influx of pioneers, many of them Italian immigrants, who first settled in the area for the burgeoning fur trade and the Idaho gold rush. Though the commercial wine industry didn’t catch on in the region until the 1950s when the Pesciallo family established Blue Mountain Vineyards, the first in the region since the Prohibition.

By the 1970s, wine-makers could see the potential for greatness thanks to climate conditions conducive to long growing seasons. The Cascade Mountain forms a natural rain shadow that protects the region, resulting in hot days and cool nights. There are a variety of terroirs extending through the region from the Blue Mountains downward. Glacial melt from the time of the Ice Age has left a deposit of rich, grape-friendly silt in much of the growing region. Walla Walla was granted AVA status in 1984.

  • DM - I'm not sure about Nebbiolo in Walla Walla.  The region seems to be too hot for Nebbiolo in comparison to Northern Italy. Some of the better Washington Nebbiolo I have had comes from Red Mountain vineyards.  Which is interesting, because when you look up "Hot Washington AVA" in the dictionary you find a picture of Red Mountain!  The quality... • Va Piano Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Very oaky on the nose. Attractive clear, deep purple color. WHOA. Major tannin on introduction. Gripping does not describe it. This is windpipe-constricting puckeriness. There is a hint of typical CS cassis, but I am having to look for it. I am getting earthiness and rough tobacco-y things mid- to rear-palate. On the aftertaste Im gettin... Read More

  • Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a beautiful deep garnet color in the glass with nice clarity. The nose is a lovely combination of ripe wild berries, blackberry, marionberry and raspberry intermingled with some earthy notes of leather and a hint of baking spice. The taste is a burst of tart cherry at the outset that transitions nicely to some vanilla bean and dark... Read More
