for this region?

Walla Walla is a wine region within Columbia Valley that straddles both Oregon and Washington. Wine-making began in the mid-1800s, when an influx of pioneers, many of them Italian immigrants, who first settled in the area for the burgeoning fur trade and the Idaho gold rush. Though the commercial wine industry didn’t catch on in the region until the 1950s when the Pesciallo family established Blue Mountain Vineyards, the first in the region since the Prohibition.

By the 1970s, wine-makers could see the potential for greatness thanks to climate conditions conducive to long growing seasons. The Cascade Mountain forms a natural rain shadow that protects the region, resulting in hot days and cool nights. There are a variety of terroirs extending through the region from the Blue Mountains downward. Glacial melt from the time of the Ice Age has left a deposit of rich, grape-friendly silt in much of the growing region. Walla Walla was granted AVA status in 1984.

  • Tero Estates Tero Cabernet Sauvignon-Walla Walla Valley Walla Walla Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky purple in the glass, with a subdued garnet tint along the edges. The nose is just a dream, wonderful notes of leather, cedar, a hint of peat and some peppery spice notes, just the ideal combination of aromas that I've come to love in a good Washington wine. The taste is a rush of rich fruit, sweet cherry, black plum an... Read More

  • Seven Hills Winery Mcclellan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep purple color at the center with a bright ruby along the edges, just what you'd expect from a high-quality Cabernet. The nose is just a breath of ripe berries and earthy leather and oak, that just brings back memories of autumn (lucky it's still spring, I just checked!). The taste is a rush of ripe berries, blackberry, marion... Read More

  • Dama Wines Merlot Walla Walla Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a wonderful bright ruby color with great clarity, reminiscent of some great old world Merlot. The nose is a great combination of green grass and ripe black fruit, for a perfect springtime red wine. The taste is quite nice, with some nice blackberry and raspberry flavors up front that transitions to some lovely green spice notes of ... Read More

  • We are renting a car of course, so I'll do most of the driving.  Driving to Walla Walla will be an experience I bet, as we go over the Cascades.  I hope I can rent an AWD vehicle, like the Jeep we had last year (with it's heated steering wheel).  Keep your winery visit ideas coming in.Oh I forgot another reservation we have.  It's a special Prov... Snoothrank:

Precept Wine in Seattle created this blend of Syrah (60%) and Merlot using fruit from breathtaking Wallula Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills and Willard in the Yakima Valley. A light hand with oak allows for a nose of black cherry, red currant and cola with whiffs of anise and tar. Theres pleasing balance to its lighter structure thats focused ... Read More
