Columbia Gorge Wine

The confusing thing about this AVA is that there are two places called “The Gorge” in Washington State, and both are steep canyons cut by the Columbia River. However, they are located in two completely different places! The Columbia Gorge AVA is one of the smallest and newest, bordering the western edge of the Columbia Valley AVA.

Here the Cascade Mountains are bisected by the Columbia River as it runs through a very narrow passage, creating a wind tunnel effect. The appellation includes land across the river in Oregon, although the vineyards there are less influenced by the Cascade Mountains and are at lower elevations than those on the Washington side. Roughly 350 acres are planted, but the quality of the grapes being grown has caught the attention of winemakers from both states. On the Washington side, vineyards are on south-facing slopes above the river. Those closest to the mountains are among the few in the state that can be dry-farmed. The most famous vineyard is Celilo, and it is particularly Read more »

  • Sineann Celilo Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2013

Perfectly fine Gewurtz from Sineann in Newberg OR. Very floral nose with some more on the palate along with dried apricot, orange marmalade and just a hint of clove. The acidity is nice but not mouth puckering and the finish is fairly long, similar to a dessert wine. Read More

  • Expected nothing much from a Washington, Columbia Gorge Pinot, but I'm really liking it. Really nice strawberry/raspberry aromas with excellent freshness and tartness to the red fruit flavors. My only bottle but glad to experiment with this region. I also recall a modest price for this, which compares favorably to a good vintage/producer Bourgog... Read More

  • Brooks Gewurztraminer Oak Ridge Vineyard Columbia Gorge 2012

Very clear pale yellow color. Typical, for Gewurz, foral--orange blossoms--"sweet" nose. On the tongue, not as much "spice" as you might expect from Gewurz. Lot's of orange or tangerine fruit flavors. Very detectable sweetness is balanced fairly well but acid. Very pleasant finish that lingers for a few seconds. US$15.00 at Everson Royce i... Read More

  • Klickitat Canyon Organic Syrah 2009

This is my first taste of Klickitat Canyon based in Lyle, Washington Columbia Gorge. It's totally organic and sulfite free. It has a fresh aroma. Tasting this wine emits a fresh raspberry flash in the mouth with a mild taste of cinnamon. Tannins are medium, not too overpowering but this is a definite dry Syrah. Not sure whether it needs more age... Read More
