Columbia County is within the Hudson River Valley in New York. While the Hudson River Valley is a historic wine-producing region, Columbia County is fairly new on the scene. Hudson-Chatham Winery is its first commercial vineyard, open since 2007. Since then, a handful of others are starting to crop up. The cool climate is well suited for North American/French hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Wineries also offer fruit wines such as plum wine, liqueurs such as Cassis, and ciders.

  • Tero Estates Tero Cabernet Sauvignon-Walla Walla Valley Walla Walla Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky purple color in the glass, and it even left some deep indigo on the cork as well. The nose is very rich, with some sweet fruit, plum, blackberry and cassis, overlaid with some leather and black pepper. The taste is very nice and a classic Walla Walla style Cabernet, rich black fruit up front, blackberries, black cherry... Read More

  • Seven Hills Seven Hills Vineyard Reserve Merlot 1998

    Snoothrank:

The wine is pretty clear around the edges, with some opacity toward the center, but still a bright ruby color all around. The nose is very nice, with loads of ripe fruit, black plum, tart cherry and blueberry, overlaid with layers of anise, leather and Asian spice. The taste is delightful, with some initial red fruit, blackberries, plum and ta... Read More

  • Waterbrook Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

    Snoothrank:

Moderately intense on the nose but showing fine balance with nuanced dark chocolate, cedary oak, violet, faint herb and wild blackberry aromas. In the mouth this is a little edge and bright, very medium weight with fine layered flavors of black currant, plum, vanilla and toast. The tannins add to the edginess here, being very slightly rough aro... Read More

  • Reininger Cima 2007

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely deep ruby in the glass. The nose is very interesting, with a whiff of leather that is layered upon rich ripe fruit, lovely spice, vanilla and a hint of dried flowers. The taste is just marvelous, with a subdued combination of fruit, blackberry and cherry cola with a hint of cassis and plum midpalate. The finish is divine,... Read More

Excellent nose of peach, nectarine and slight tangerine. Lacks power of some of the older vintages. Needs more acid. My rating -- 85 Read More
