Columbia County Wine

Columbia County is within the Hudson River Valley in New York. While the Hudson River Valley is a historic wine-producing region, Columbia County is fairly new on the scene. Hudson-Chatham Winery is its first commercial vineyard, open since 2007. Since then, a handful of others are starting to crop up. The cool climate is well suited for North American/French hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Wineries also offer fruit wines such as plum wine, liqueurs such as Cassis, and ciders.

  • L'Ecole No. 41 Syrah Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard 2002

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a beautiful deep garnet color in the glass, with pretty good clarity despite its age. The nose is a blast of green grass and herbs which settles down to some lovely earthy notes of smoke and leather, overlaying some interesting mocha and cherry cola notes. The taste is divine, a blast of black cherry and cassis that quickly settles... Read More

  • L'Ecole No. 41 Merlot Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard 2001

    Snoothrank:

Now bear in mind, I decanted this bottle for about an hour before tasting. The color is a lighter ruby, with just the faintest hint of auburn along the edges. The nose is a combination of sweet ripe fruit, blackberry, plum and a hint of raisin, along with some floral notes and tobacco. The taste is remarkably fruit forward, with some lovely s... Read More

  • Seven Hills "Pentad" Walla Walla Valley Washington 2012

    Snoothrank:

The wine itself is a beautiful dark ruby color in the glass with great clarity. The nose is a rich combination of leather, dark cherry, espresso and some floral notes. The taste is really exceptional, with some lovely ripe berry notes up front that transition beautifully to some lovely tart cherry and mocha notes midpalate. The finish is show... Read More

  • Seven Hills Columbia Valley Dry Rose' 2014

    Snoothrank:

The color of the wine is a nice pale peach color in the glass. The nose expresses an interesting combination of citrus notes, along with some white floral notes and a bit of peach. The taste is delightful, with a crisp blast of fruit up front, plenty of grapefruit and tropical notes of papaya that give way to some honeysuckle and mineral notes... Read More

  • Nocking Point Wicked Aim Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very pleasant, straightforward wine. Something of a tart currant flavor with a bit of a dark chocolate on the tip of the tongue. More of a puckery drying, mid-palate. Very short finish. Easy to drink, and, probably a reasonable buy. I was gifted this bottle, but it looks like the price is about $20. Read More

  • Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah 2008

    Snoothrank:

Pretty interesting wine. Quite different from the California style for a Bordeaux blend. (Well, duh.) That might be from the lack of Cabernet Sauvignon. First of all, it is a very attractive bluish-purple in the glass. Big, fruity nose of blackberry and (I know there is no CS.) currant. On the tongue I get that initial blast of black fruit,... • Seven Hills Winery Mcclellan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely deep violet in the glass with great clarity. The nose is quite nice, with aromas of leather over some ripe boysenberry and cherry notes and just a hint of dried herbs. The taste is just wonderful, with a rather subdued bit of fruit up front, berries and cherry that quickly gives way to some lovely mineral notes midpalate, ... Read More
