Columbia County is within the Hudson River Valley in New York. While the Hudson River Valley is a historic wine-producing region, Columbia County is fairly new on the scene. Hudson-Chatham Winery is its first commercial vineyard, open since 2007. Since then, a handful of others are starting to crop up. The cool climate is well suited for North American/French hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Wineries also offer fruit wines such as plum wine, liqueurs such as Cassis, and ciders.

  • Rulo Walla Walla Washington Orb 2012

    Snoothrank:

Still young. Will be better in a year or more. Nice complexity and layers. Big berry and spice notes. Lovely lasting finish. Read More

  • Sangiovese 2007

    Snoothrank:

And now to the wine, it's a deep purple in the glass with ruby along the edges and a good bit of opacity at the center. The nose is just how I remembered it, rich dark fruit, blackberry, plum and black currant with an overriding aroma of smoke, leather and spice, with just a hint of dark chocolate. The taste is absolutely lovely, with a subdue... Read More

  • Glen Fiona Syrah Walla Walla Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Purple ink. This wine is a floral beauty, filled with blackberry and a chewy texture that stays with you on finish. Notes of spice, tobacco and tannins that are noticeably dry and constant but not intrusive. Price is amazing at around $10 dollars. Word of notice: Let this one breathe or decant if possible as the flavor will deepen and open to a ... Read More

  • Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard Reserve 2010

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky purple in the glass with bright ruby along the edges. The nose tells me immediately I'm in for a treat, with aromas of rich leather, blueberries, plum and spice notes. The taste is intense, with a burst of ripe black fruit, plum, blackberries and black currant that gracefully transitions to some dark chocolate and lico... Read More

  • L'Ecole No. 41 Merlot Walla Walla 2001

    Snoothrank:

I opened this bottle about an hour ago to let it get used to this wintry air, so hopefully it's opened up a bit. The color is a nice ruby with a hint of opacity at the center, but not the usual tinge of brown that you sometimes see on a wine more than a decade old. The nose is fantastic, with a blast of tart cherry, rich oak, green grass, Asia... Read More

  • Gramercy Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

Smells really Cabernet like recalling Napa cabernets of the 1970s. Its a little smokey, blackcurrant and black cherry toned on the nose with a fine base of savory herbs, tobacco, tea, and old wood nuance. Big, round, soft tannins lend this a lovely feel, and it displays gorgeous floral framed blackberry and black currant fruit on the palate. T... Read More

  • Gramercy Cellars Syrah Walla Walla Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Crushed rock, ink, and herb stem come together on the nose in a very floral almost vegetal way. Air brings out white pepper nuance, lots of India ink, a little middle eastern spice, juniper and burnt roast beef aromas. soft on entry, this shows off nicely ripe tannins that are quite polished supporting bright fruit, almost black currant toned fr...
