Columbia County is within the Hudson River Valley in New York. While the Hudson River Valley is a historic wine-producing region, Columbia County is fairly new on the scene. Hudson-Chatham Winery is its first commercial vineyard, open since 2007. Since then, a handful of others are starting to crop up. The cool climate is well suited for North American/French hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Wineries also offer fruit wines such as plum wine, liqueurs such as Cassis, and ciders.

  • Va Piano Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Very oaky on the nose. Attractive clear, deep purple color. WHOA. Major tannin on introduction. Gripping does not describe it. This is windpipe-constricting puckeriness. There is a hint of typical CS cassis, but I am having to look for it. I am getting earthiness and rough tobacco-y things mid- to rear-palate. On the aftertaste Im gettin... Read More

The wine is a beautiful deep garnet color in the glass with nice clarity. • Kirkland Columbia Valley Merlot 2013

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a brooding ruby color in the glass with nice clarity. The nose is a pleasant combination of ripe plum, blackberry and leather with just a hint of dusty limestone, a classic CV merlot nose. The taste was a rush of warm ripe fruit intermingled with a bit of anise and baking spice which transitioned nicely to some notes of mocha and v... Read More
