is arguably Washington’s most well-defined and distinctive viticultural area. In large part this is due to its geography. It is a moderately steep slope (not much of a mountain, really) facing southwest as it rises above a sharp bend in the Yakima River, at the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. In addition, wineries such as Quilceda Creek, DeLille Cellars and Cadence have recently planted their own estate vineyards on the mountain.

Red Mountain is one of the hottest sites in the state, and ripens Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a wide variety of Rhone grapes such as Syrah exceptionally well. The sandy loam soil is high in calcium and alkaline, which is reflected in the quality of the grapes that grow here. Until recently, growth was impossible due to a moratorium on well Read more »

  • Back at ya, Kim.Thank you for the excellent list.  The good news is that I live in a large metropolitan area.  So, it is possible that I might be able to find some of the labels that you have suggested. As it turns out, you caught me in a mistatement.  (I'm old.  I forget.)  I have had another South African wine, and it was a Pinotage from Neil ... • Soléna Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Klipsun Vineyard 2008

    Snoothrank:

A bright wine offering aromas of dust, ripe red cherry, dried plum, vanilla and baking spices. By mouth there are bright red fruits, delineated with a dynamic dried cranberry edge, surrounded by spice, celery seed and toasted herb over moderate tannins that trail into a warm, persistent finish. A wash of extreme pleasure coating the mouth with a ... Read More

  • Sparkman Cellars Red Bordeaux Blend Red Mountain Stella Mae 2007

    Snoothrank:

he wine is a deep purple color in the glass, and the nose is an interesting combination of prune, ripe cherry, Asian spices and smoke. The taste is not at all what I expected given the nose, but there were lush flavors of ripe berries on the outset, followed by some lovely notes of mocha and cocoa powder midpalate, followed by a very smooth, ve...
