is arguably Washington’s most well-defined and distinctive viticultural area. In large part this is due to its geography. It is a moderately steep slope (not much of a mountain, really) facing southwest as it rises above a sharp bend in the Yakima River, at the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. Red Mountain is one of the hottest sites in the state, and ripens Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a wide variety of Rhone grapes such as Syrah exceptionally well. The sandy loam soil is high in calcium and alkaline, which is reflected in the quality of the grapes that grow here. Until recently, growth was impossible due to a moratorium on well Read more »

  • Seven Hills Ciel du Cheval 2009

    Snoothrank:

Rather subtle yet complex on the nose with layers of herbs, medicinal spices flecked with dollops of oak spice and vanilla all over a base of firm fresh black currant fruit. The fine balance here makes this feel a bit smaller and more open that it proves to be. There's plenty to like here with layers of currant and cherry fruit topped with savo... Read More

  • Terra Blanca Onyx 2008

    Snoothrank:

Mint, dried berry fruit and strawberries in cream greets the nose along with notes of toasted nuts and leather. Lots of red cherry fruit pops on the entry here along with some spicy earth, toasted nut, and sagey herb notes. This is broad and wide open today, expansive on the palate and transparent with fruit that is decidedly in the red end of t... Read More

This highly perfumed, deeply fruited Bordeaux blend possesses the seamless fruit-structure integration that I have come to expect from Washington. The tannins are silky and the acidity bright, keeping the expansive breadth on the palate and significant extraction in check. Read More
