is arguably Washington’s most well-defined and distinctive viticultural area. In large part this is due to its geography. It is a moderately steep slope (not much of a mountain, really) facing southwest as it rises above a sharp bend in the Yakima River, at the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. The AVA totals 4,040 acres, with just 700 under vine. It is home to two of Washington’s most prestigious vineyards — Ciel du Cheval and Klipsun — which provide grapes for dozens of the state’s most sought-after boutique wines. In addition, wineries such as Quilceda Creek, DeLille Cellars and Cadence have recently planted their own estate vineyards on the mountain.

Red Mountain is one of the hottest sites in the state, and ripens Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a wide variety of Rhone grapes such as Syrah exceptionally well. The sandy loam soil is high in calcium and alkaline, which is reflected in the quality of the grapes that grow here. Until recently, growth was impossible due to a moratorium on well Read more »

  • Snowman, welcome to Snooth.  We look forward to hearing about your wine adventures. As you might expect, the question you have asked does not have a simple answer.  Let me just ramble (sounds better than pontificate) here a bit.Wines are different.  That alone eliminates the opportunity for a simple one-size-fits-all answer.  As friend DVogler st... • While you guys were being quite funny and creating interesting postings, I was enjoying a 2006 Medlock Ames (Alexander Valley) Bell Mountain red wine with my Marie Calendar's Beef Pot Pie.  Now there is a most excellent pairing.  This wine had lots of fruit and smooth tannins.  I only drank half the bottle however.   Read More

  • The markup on the Chappellet Cervantes is "only" about 2.4 X retail, and, at $83 it comes in well under your target price.  I have never been disappointed by a Chappellet.  GregT pointed out the one wine that I was surprised to see on that list--Phillip Togni.  Is the vintage year on that one 1997?   I have seen a lot of comments from people who... • I love the Ridge labels.  They are the most informative labels around.  GregT made reference to Ridge "single vineyard" bottliings and "Zin-based" bottlings.  Very few of the Ridge bottlings will have "Zinfandel" prominently displayed on the front label.  In the United States in order for a wine to be identified by a grape variety, it must conta... • Betz la Cote Rousse Syrah Red Mountain 2011

    Snoothrank:

Inky on the nose and rich with aromas of dried herbs, roasted coffee, and almost gamy meat topped with spicy black pepper notes. Another big wine thats underpinned with good acids and fine ripe, polished tannins that lend this a voluptuous texture. Theres lots of tobacco, meat juices, and a bit of brown spice on the powerful palate which reve... Read More

  • Canoe Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Taylor 2011

    Snoothrank:

Power and complexity on the nose, along with great complexity to the herbal spice, subtle fruit and noticeable backing spice aromas. This is big, rich, and chewy yet soft and supple. A bit low on acid perhaps but with great, transparent red currant and red cherry in a supple style. After an early hint of candied sweetness this turns firm and... Read More
