is arguably Washington’s most well-defined and distinctive viticultural area. In large part this is due to its geography. It is a moderately steep slope (not much of a mountain, really) facing southwest as it rises above a sharp bend in the Yakima River, at the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. The AVA totals 4,040 acres, with just 700 under vine. It is home to two of Washington’s most prestigious vineyards — Ciel du Cheval and Klipsun — which provide grapes for dozens of the state’s most sought-after boutique wines. In addition, wineries such as Quilceda Creek, DeLille Cellars and Cadence have recently planted their own estate vineyards on the mountain.

Red Mountain is one of the hottest sites in the state, and ripens Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a wide variety of Rhone grapes such as Syrah exceptionally well. The sandy loam soil is high in calcium and alkaline, which is reflected in the quality of the grapes that grow here. Until recently, growth was impossible due to a moratorium on well Read more »

Red Mountain on Snooth

  • On Saturday afternoon, Zufrieden and I went to a fellow wine aficionado's ... Mike brought a Kiona "Red Mountain" blend, but was more for something to enjoy after, which we did as I'm a huge fan, but it didn't meet the 80% cs threshold for the tasting.I didn't take many notes as I was determined simply to guess which wines were which.  I can s... • Kiona Vineyards Red Mountain Ava Lemberger 2017

    Snoothrank:

The 2017 Lemberger from Kiona is spot on for the usual flavour profile and acidity, the difference being a denser, fruitier and slightly less bracing mouth feel. The wine is black - a result of the searing summer heat in the Yakima area no doubt, but one notices the lighter body and food-friendly acidity right away. Finish is short to medium, ... Read More

  • Betz Family Winery Cote la Rousse Syrah Red Mountain 2012

    Snoothrank:

I confess to having never had this wine before, but its reputation was equally strong in the mind, so expectations were equally strong. The wine is dark - even along the glass rim... opaque black cherry. Cola, cherry and used coffee grounds with just a meaty hint of raw bacon greet the nose. Very sophisticated. Entry is elegant, balanced and p... Read More

  • I second rckr's comments.Merlot has been traditionally described as being "softer" than Cabernet Sauvignon.  Generalizations, however, are reliably unreliable.  For example, my experience with any red wine from Napa's Spring Mountain District is that they are all very tannic.  A blind tasting of a Merlot from Spring Mountain next to a Cabernet S... • Al, I find most red wines, regardless of the maker, from Spring Mountain District to be noticeably tannic.  Maybe Keenan is the most obvious.  My research is limited to just a few bottles each year.Keenan has two Merlot bottlings--Carneros and Napa Valley. The Carneros bottling is closer to your expectation for Merlot--a softer wine with "sweeter...
