Yakima Valley, within the Columbia Valley district, became Washington State’s first official AVA in 1983. Wine-making in the valley can be traced back to the early days of the pioneers in the 1860s, but its commercial success didn’t hit until much later. In the 1930s, oenologist Dr. Walter Clore of Washington State University Research Center, established experimental vineyards in the valley. In the 1960s, Charles Nagel is credited with starting the Washington Wine Project focusing on Yakima Valley grapes that were grown by Clore. By the early 1980s, Covey Run and Hogue Cellars had achieved commercial success just before the AVA was designated. Today, Yakima Valley has the most concentrated vine plantings in the state, making up a large percentage of its wine production and grape-sourcing.

  • Seven Hills Ciel du Cheval 2009

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, as you would expect from such a blend. The nose presents some lovely black cherry and plum, along with some cinnamon and floral notes. There is also a sweetness in the nose, almost candy-like, which is offset by the aroma of licorice and just a hint of cedar. The taste is a true delight, with a love... Read More

  • Nota Bene Cellars Red Bordeaux Blend Red Mountain Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nota Bene proves that you don't have to spend $50 for a wine from one of Washington's greatest vineyards. Big, and bold the wine has deep fruit and mando tannic structure, much more than I had expected for a $25 bottle. It shows all the refinement this vineyard is known for. A true value. Read More

Andrew Will is definitely a benchmark winery for this region and Ciel du Cheval a benchmark vineyard. Together the make a wonderful example of a "Right Bank" style Bordeaux Blend. Words like sharp, focused and precise come to mind when drinking this wine. It's wine in HD. Cab Franc brings his herby, minerally soul to the party counterpointed... Read More
