Yakima Valley, within the Columbia Valley district, became Washington State’s first official AVA in 1983. Wine-making in the valley can be traced back to the early days of the pioneers in the 1860s, but its commercial success didn’t hit until much later. In the 1930s, oenologist Dr. Walter Clore of Washington State University Research Center, established experimental vineyards in the valley. In the 1960s, Charles Nagel is credited with starting the Washington Wine Project focusing on Yakima Valley grapes that were grown by Clore. By the early 1980s, Covey Run and Hogue Cellars had achieved commercial success just before the AVA was designated. Today, Yakima Valley has the most concentrated vine plantings in the state, making up a large percentage of its wine production and grape-sourcing.
The cool-climate region is largely protected by a rain shadow formed by the Cascade Mountains. The Yakima river and its tributaries and canals provide the needed irrigation for the wineries Read more »

  • Figured it would be easy to fool you on the top photo. It's actually Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. Still the French tradition, and I've drunk wine from vendors around the place that many times has been quite good (obviously shipped in reefers). How much rum were you drinking in Tahiti, anyway?  ;-)The bottom two photos in my post above are fro... Read More

  • Canoe Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Taylor 2011

A bit low on acid perhaps but with great, transparent red currant and red cherry in a supple style. After an early hint of candied sweetness this turns firm and... Read More

The wine is a lovely deep purple color in the glass with limited opacity. The nose is a lovely blend of green grass, balsamic, cedar and cocoa powder. The taste is quite lovely, with some subtle fruit up front that's enveloped with some complex flavors of anise, lavender and minerality. The finish is long, smooth and with a velvety mouthfeel tha...
