Tannat grows in southwest France in a region called Madiran and produces what I think is the most dense and tannic wine in the world. Yet in the hands of a skilled winemaker, the stuff is great, can cellar for decades or more, and is probably drinkable after about 5-7 years although I'd urge you to decant and wait an hour or so before drinking a Tannat wine that young. My personal favorite is Montus Madiran, but I'm eager to try the Viginia version, verily! Madirans are often blended with a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon, or Cab Franc and sometimes with Fer Servadou (called "Pinenc" in the Madiran region itself). Tannat has become one of the signature grapes of Uruguay, responsible for about a third of the wine produced in that country...look for great stuff from Don Prospero, Omar Perco, and Bouza. Most interestingly of all - to me, anyway - Tannat is grown and produced as a varietal in California and Virginia among other places, after it was recognized by BATF (now TTB) in 2002. Tablas Creek in Paso Robles does in in addition to Chrysalis    (hide)

  As Malbecs go, it was fair. A drinkable wine, and not bad with lamb. This was actually a mistake by the restaurant (I had ordered the OTHER 2006 Malbec). A drinkable wine, and not bad with lamb. This was actually a mistake by the restaurant (I had ordered the OTHER 2006 Malbec). The waiter and I were both distracted with the label damage and before I realized it was the wrong wine, it was open. My fault as I was on autopilot at the time. About the wine, lots of tannin. Can definitely differentiate this wine from Argentine wines. Dark ruby color with some oak, cherry. I would drink it again if it were free but I can get a nice Argentine Malbec which is more enjoyable for less.    (hide)

  I do a cassoulet dinner every year. Many wines to pair with the complex, layered flavors. I can't wait for this years and look forward to writing about it.
