Shenandoah Valley (Virginia) Wine

The "Original" Shenandoah Valley ava, located in Virginia (as opposed to the Shenandoah Valley in California) is located on the "other side of the mountain" from Virginia's most reknown central region entitled the "Monticello" AVA, so-called for the home of Thomas Jefferson which is located in the center of the region. The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is the most rapidly growing wine-producing region in the state with new vineyards and wineries popping up as quick as one turns his/her head. Here is a list of the current wineries located along the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail: http://shenandoahvalleywinetrail.com/Wineries.htm I highly encourage a visit to the region as they are truly producing some of the best wines in ALL of Virginia, let alone on the Atlantic Coast. They're ample use of newer, hybrid varietals, such as Chambourcin and Seyval Blanc has also stirred excitement among travellers and tasters alike, and the climate is proving every bit as bountiful for Virginia's white staple varietal Read more »

  • Rockbridge Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend Dechiel Reserve Meritage 2008

    Snoothrank:

Not much going on with this Virginia bordeaux blend. A little flat, maybe past its prime. Dominated by the cab franc mustiness with just a hint of the cab sauv lingering. Light to moderate tannins, dried cherry and prune with some green pepper on the back end. Read More

  • Glen Manor Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not as grassy as some Sauvignon Blancs, but still very characteristic. Strong citrus, especially grapefruit and maybe a little chalk on the finish. Read More

  • Currently studying in Virginia, I've had the pleasure of vineyard hopping in the Shenandoah Valley. While eager to support my local economy and join the ranks of Virginia wine lovers, I have noticed something rather unpleasant about nearly all the Virginia reds I've tasted. Every one of them smells of damp gym bags. I kid you not. I feel lik... Read More

  • Barren Ridge Vineyards Touriga 2007

    Snoothrank:

(This tasting followed a quick, 10-minute decant)Ruby in color, inviting on the nose with cherries, deep, red & dark fruits, the '07 Barren Ridge Touriga is a great example of both how and why this varietal is spreading across vineyards in Virginia like wildfire.Full bodied and bold on the palate, it brings concentrated blackberry, currant, and ...
