Thomas Jefferson, who no doubt penned the Declaration of Independence with a glass of fine wine at hand, can justifiably be called America’s first wine connoisseur. He was also the pioneer of Virginia viticulture, and it is appropriate that this central Virginia appellation is named for Jefferson’s home, Monticello. The AVA – the heart of which is Charlottesville - covers 1,250 square miles over four counties, including Albermarle, Orange, Nelson and Greene. The area runs along the eastern flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the best vineyards often found at elevations of 800 feet and higher. Vineyards here benefit from a natural east-southeast exposure and warm summer temperatures. Winter kill, bunch rot diseases and pest management have made careful varietal, clonal selection and vine-training systems imperative here. Growers benefit greatly from Virginia Tech’s Alson H. Smith Agricultural Center in Winchester for invaluable research. Key vinifera varieties include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon Read more »

  • Barboursville Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2006

    Snoothrank:

I've always been a fan of Barboursville's Cab Franc, but the 2008 Pinot Grigio was really quite good. Shimmering, zesty fruit -- apple, lychee, pineapple -- presented in a clean, racy fashion. Like a fine NZ Sauv Blanc without all the cat-pee overtones. Hey, I'm from Virginia, and I know how mediocre most of our wines are. This one is *good.* Read More

  • White Hall Vineyards Petit Verdot 2006

    Snoothrank:

White Hall Vineyards has been winning awards and this is a good example of why. Smooth as velvet and about as full in the mouth too. I just could not get enough of this wine. I loved it with a dish of pesto, oil and fresh pasta. Read More

    Snoothrank:

2006 White Hall Vineyards Breakheart Red Color: similar to their Cab Franc, a little darker, Nose: a little mustier, more in keeping with the VA tradition, Taste: a little sour (?), maybe its residual citrus from an orange I had a while ago, raspberry, light tannins, light finishLamarr: C+ (not as bad as I had imagine, just not much going on, a... 2006 White Hall Petit Manseng Virginia Color: yellow-green, favoring yellow, not pale, Nose: Mark Rotten Apples?, we cant tell the smell, Taste: very sweet, more of a dessert wine than an aperitif, slight syrupy finish, coating the mouth, not too nice, especially considering the call-time (5:52 pm)Lamarr: A- (decent white for what Ive had, in... • Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery Red Blend Monticello Three Sisters Elderberry NV

    Snoothrank:

This wine is a rich deep color. Unlike the meads of Hill Top Berry, the flavors aren't too intense. It has that deep cherry and exotic berry taste that really tickles the tongue. I would not recommend any Hill Top Berry wines paired with a meal, though I have heard that they can be brilliant in cooking. We had this after dinner with a few sp... Read More
