Yamhill-carlton Wine

The Yamhill Carlton District AVA, located in the northern Willamette Valley was described by Ken Wright in his original petition to the then BATF (now known as TTB) as a “south-facing bowl containing a series of horseshoe-shaped eroded hills”. This area surrounds the cities of Yamhill and Carlton and also straddles the Yamhill and Washington County border.

Like the Dundee Hills, soil is a crucial factor to the style of wines made in the region. The AVA’s ancient sedimentary rock imparts aromas and flavors such as coffee, cocoa, anise, cedar and tobacco into wines made from grapes grown in the region.

Like other Willamette Valley AVAs, only those vineyards falling within defined elevations (in this case between 200 and 1,000 feet) are permitted to use the AVA designation. This trend amongst the new Willamette Valley sub-appellations, such as the Yamhill Carlton District, only reaffirms Oregon as the leader of ‘terroir’ and quality consciousness in North America.

  • LuckyLucy, let me also welcome you to Snooth!  If you're looking for "black cherry, milk chocolate, earthy & even smoky notes that's not so tannic" I'd suggest an older southern Rhone. Many of the grenache, syrah, mourvedre blends have loads of dark cherry and earth, but may be a bit on the tannic side when young. Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a bit pric... Read More

  • Willakenzie Estate Pinot Noir Kiana 2011

Excellent Willakenzie Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir. A bit herbaceous on the nose. The palate has a lot of ripe red and dark cherry with just a hint of lime. This has some really nice acidity balanced with the fruit, supple fine grained tannins and a fairly long finish. Read More

  • Hamacher Pinot Noir Oregon 2010

Pretty good Willamette pinot. Bright red and crushed black cherry, nice acidity, a touch of smoke and a decent finish. The finish is of medium length and the tannins are a bit grainy for pinot. Read More

  • Kudos Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton District Willamette Valley 2012

Nice, light to medium bodied Oregon pinot noir. Decent acidity, good black cherry, rhubarb, dark plum and dried prune overtones with a fairly long finish. Good but not great in that there aren't a lot of layers, just a straight forward dark fruit front end. Read More

  • Kramer Vineyards Pinot Noir Rose 2013

Very satisfying sparkler from one of Willamette's oldest wineries. Pink rose color with wild strawberry, tart cherry, decent acidity and a medium finish. This is not real dry but not sweet either, it walks a fine line between both, quite enjoyable. Read More
