The Yamhill Carlton District AVA, located in the northern Willamette Valley was described by Ken Wright in his original petition to the then BATF (now known as TTB) as a “south-facing bowl containing a series of horseshoe-shaped eroded hills”. This area surrounds the cities of Yamhill and Carlton and also straddles the Yamhill and Washington County border.

Like the Dundee Hills, soil is a crucial factor to the style of wines made in the region. The AVA’s ancient sedimentary rock imparts aromas and flavors such as coffee, cocoa, anise, cedar and tobacco into wines made from grapes grown in the region.

Like other Willamette Valley AVAs, only those vineyards falling within defined elevations (in this case between 200 and 1,000 feet) are permitted to use the AVA designation. This trend amongst the new Willamette Valley sub-appellations, such as the Yamhill Carlton District, only reaffirms Oregon as the leader of ‘terroir’ and quality consciousness in North America.

  • Willakenzie Estate Pinot Blanc 2012

    Snoothrank:

Certified Sustainable Lightly aromatic with hints of apple cores and lime zest on the nose along with some note of talc. Light, elegant and fresh in the mouth. Just not much going on here. Much less body than I had hoped for. Touches of smoke and ripe cherries on the nose with cherries and caramel on the palate. Unremarkable finish. I had higher expectations. Read More

  • Kudos Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton District Willamette Valley Oregon Willamette Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not very complex, a little thin, somewhat angular having acidity but lacking the balance of fruit with little depth of flavor. Started to open up after an hour but still not overwhelming. Read More

  • Anne Amie Riesling Yamhill-Carlton Estate Dry Riesling 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very floral and frankly balsamic on the nose with a resin cast over a base of apricot fruit. Succulent and focused in the mouth with acid driven flavor of lemon and lime that pick up a hint of melon and pineapple with some air. This is dry and firm in the mouth, though it finishes rather quickly on a green apple peel note. Very refreshing 85pts Read More
