Yamhill County is situated in the topmost part of the Willamette Valley region in Oregon. Though there is a history of wine-making in the region dating back to the 1850s with the first immigrant settlers, it wasn’t until long after the Repeal of the Prohibition that things began to take shape wine-wise.

In the 1960s, oenologists from UC Davis saw the potential for wine production in the area, even though from a temperature perspective, the region’s climate was deemed to cool for quality production. Still, David Lett, Dick Erath and Charles Coury insisted on following up on their independent research and established their own vineyards within Yamhill County (Eyrie Vineyards, Erath Winery and David Hill Vineyard respectively). The varietals they chose to grow, Pinot Noir among them, were carefully selected according to what their research found suited to the terroir and climate. At Eyrie Vineyards in the Dundee Hills, David Lett is credited with planting the first Read more »

  • Primarius Pinot Noir Oregon 2010

    Snoothrank:

The Primarius certainly bears a very light, almost pinkish color (if would have been a hell-of a-lot darker if they had added more Syrah). The taste matches the color, with bright red cherry, cranberry and ripe raspberry; but the soft and delicate earthy and dried herb notes arent that far behind. Very mellow, with a beautifully long finish. It ... Read More

  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon Chardonnay Dundee Hills Arthur 2010

    Snoothrank:

With a little almond, smoke and a hint of Quince on the nose, this is rather gentle. Emerging top notes of flowers and a nice, fresh yeastiness. Bright on entry with fine acidity backed up by a lot of fresh fruit. Crisp and clean. Very finely focused, as well as lively and elegant on the fairly long finish, which shows a hint of orange cream. 89pts Read More

  • Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Blanc Willamette Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is savory and earthy on the nose with fine sandy, mineral-tinged fruit that recalls pear skins and almond skin. Very finely balanced in the mouth with an elegant gossamer texture and more mineral-flecked pear fruit. Turns a touch light on the finish, but with the lovely tense and mineral fruit that reveals an enduring sweetness, its easy to... Read More

  • Deponte Cellars Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2010

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with all many of crushed up herb and flower stems, a little peppery spice, and lovely intense red berry fruit. On the palate this is so juicy with bright acidity and a lightweight open, Burgundian feel. The red fruit is big but not heavy on the palate with very pretty ripeness. The finish is layered with herb and spice notes ... Read More

  • Torii Mor Pinot Gris Willamette Valley Reserve 2011

    Snoothrank:

Mineral, pear and dried citrus peel greet the nose topped with suggestions of ginseng and honeycomb. This is lovely in the mouth, showing a touch of sweetness but remaining airy and deft on the palate. Vibrant acids support citric and sour apple fruit with a nice edge of bitter pear peel. The finish is clean and kind of piercing, more citric tha... Read More
