The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.

However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.

But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region too cool Read more »

  • Wine By Joe Pinot Noir Oregon 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is a solid, smooth, earthy pinot and it has the complexity that I feel is lacking in some of the other Pinot you'll see next to it on the shelf. It's not too expensive for a pinot either. Look for it on sale for about $15, I think it's a good bottle for that price... great with a light, casual dinner. Read More

  • Torii Mor Pinot Noir Dundee Hills la Colina 2008

    Snoothrank:

Slightly candied on the nose with nice blackberry fruit accented by violette pastille, charred wood tones, and freshly turned soil notes. Silky and soft in the mouth with nice balanced structural elements concealed by ripe red fruits that have a slight coulis quality to them. the mid-palate is nicely layered with notes of woodspice, mocha and nu... • Torii Mor Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Dundee Hills Select 2009

    Snoothrank:

Slightly smoky on the nose with notes of campfire, wood spice, and vanillin drifting over dried cherry fruit. This has a distinctly toasty quality to the nose. On the palate all of that is subsumed by rich fruit, raspberries and more savory berry tones. this is nicely open and expressive with the mid-palate well supported by soft, integrated tan... • Torii Mor Pinot Noir Yamhill County Olson Estate Vineyard 2008

    Snoothrank:

Tight on the nose with a slightly medicinal, chinato edge which is accented by notes of dried flowers, sweet herbs, and a touch of tomato based bbq sauce. Lean and focused on entry with slightly dusty if nicely ripe tannins highlighting the flavors of slightly astringent red fruit. This comes off as a bit simple at the moment, tight and clenched... • Chehalem Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Stoller Vineyard 2001

    Snoothrank:

A bit autumnal on the nose with faded fruit and vanilla tones backed with leafy, loamy soil notes and hints of sweet meat and rootbeer candy. On the palate this offers up rich, almost jammy black raspberry fruit with a touch of almost peppery spice that follows through on the moderately long finish. The tannins are a touch astringent and pop a b... Read More
