Willamette Valley AVA Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.
However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.
But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region too cool Read more »

  • Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Estate Grown 2008

Very floral on the nose with a mineral/underbrush treebark element that lends a lightly wild tone to the light red fruit aromas. Very supple in the mouth with wonderful balance and integration. The fruit starts off with some energy but then gets a little compact on the mid-palate. Air helps but this probably needs some time to really unwind. The... Read More

  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Louise 2006

This beautifully structured New World Pinot Noir with obvious French panache looks all Cotes de Nuits in the glass; then comes the strawberry-biscuit on the nose. The entry brings more strawberry and cherry preserve with silky tannins that suggest up to 4 more years of possible bottle aging - though the wine is wonderful to the tongue now. Onl... Read More

  • Stoller Pinot Noir Jv Dundee Hills 2008

Open this bottle during a recent virtual tasting here on Snooth. Quite a different experience enjoying a wine and being able to talk to the head wine maker about the vintage and the climate and their thought process. Very informative and enjoyable. Slight signs of effervescence when unscrewing the screw cap. I saw visible CO2. On first pass the ... Read More

  • Stoller Vineyards Sv Estate Pinot Noir 2007

The nose of the Stoller SV pulled you in as the fruit turned darker shades of red, with ripe bursting strawberry and crushed raspberry, candle wax, earthy minerals and wisps of citrus. It was like velvet on the palate and balanced to the last moment. Flavors of ripe berries, earth and hints of wood washed across the tongue, yet made their presen... Read More

  • Stoller Pinot Noir Jv Dundee Hills 2008

This wine changed quite a bit over the two hours it was open. At first the nose showed a mix of ripe red fruits and pungent floral scents, but as it opened, the hard curves melted away and aromas cherry, cinnamon spice and undergrowth prevailed. On the palate, it was silky smooth with focused ripe strawberry fruit and a slight savory note. The a... Read More
