Willamette Valley AVA Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.

However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.

But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region too cool Read more »

  • Stoller Vineyards Sv Estate Pinot Noir 2007

    Snoothrank:

The nose of the Stoller SV pulled you in as the fruit turned darker shades of red, with ripe bursting strawberry and crushed raspberry, candle wax, earthy minerals and wisps of citrus. It was like velvet on the palate and balanced to the last moment. Flavors of ripe berries, earth and hints of wood washed across the tongue, yet made their presen... Read More

  • Stoller Pinot Noir Jv Dundee Hills 2008

    Snoothrank:

This wine changed quite a bit over the two hours it was open. At first the nose showed a mix of ripe red fruits and pungent floral scents, but as it opened, the hard curves melted away and aromas cherry, cinnamon spice and undergrowth prevailed. On the palate, it was silky smooth with focused ripe strawberry fruit and a slight savory note. The a... Read More

  • Stoller Vineyards Sv Estate Pinot Noir 2007

    Snoothrank:

Wow! I loved this Pinot Noir! The funny thing is I was not a fan of Pinot until I tried this one. It has a very pleasant nose, not powerful but a pleasant nose.It wasn't very dark in color as of course we know is normal for Pinot Noir. Light bodied and awesome! I had some on it's own and it was awesome! I had some with Duck & Goose liver Mousse ... Read More

  • Stoller Vineyards Sv Estate Pinot Noir 2007

    Snoothrank:

I opened this the night before the tasting and so glad I introduced some air to it. Up front, it wasn't stellar. Given about 24 hours after opening and the vacuuming most of the air out, gave it just a kiss of air. This opened it up. The nose is now filled with bright red berry fruit. Some minerality and hints of spice. Not super fragrant,... Read More

  • Stoller Pinot Noir Jv Dundee Hills 2008

    Snoothrank:

Glad I opened it a day before the tasting. Upon first tasting, it's super tart and loaded with acid. A bit young and unbalanced. Time with some air in the bottle overnight and through the following day, relaxed the nose to a nice bright cherry. Some floral tones and a hint of spice. On the palate now, bright Gamay-styled berry fruit. Red c... Read More

  • Stoller Pinot Noir Jv Estate Dundee Hills 2008

    Snoothrank:

I definitely get the stemmy that GDP noticed in the '07. That's a winemaking choice, and it adds a little without overwhelming. This is medium to light, fruity, easy entry wine. Strawberries predominated. The nose is sweet, a little bit of cherry lifesaver and roses. I enjoyed it, but would like a little more earthiness. Added a little depth... Read More

  • Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Yamhill County Red Hills Reserve 2008

    Snoothrank:

Unusually smoky and showing some caramel sweetness on the nose right off the bat. Theres nice intensity to the loamy accented red cherry/cranberry fruit on the nose and the smoky and gentle toast fades nicely into the background mostly replaced by lightly herbal/floral aromas. This is nice if tense in the mouth with vibrant acids lending a touc... Read More

  • Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Original Vines Reserve 2007

    Snoothrank:

An absolutely stunning wine that perfectly exhibits the marriage of mushroomy earthiness nd bright cherry that makes an Oregon pinot. This is not inky, in your face wine, nor is it spineless; superb balance and fresh acidity hold everything together. This is Oregon Pinot at it's best! Read More
