Willamette Valley AVA Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.

However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.

But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region too cool Read more »

Slightly cloudy pink color. Spice, earth and game, anise on nose. Black currant, plum and hints of banana. Occassional whiffs of neoprene. Deeper and a bit more red wine like than some roses. Interesting Read More

  • Winter's Hill Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

This smells terrific, its not very aromatic but then again Pinot Blanc isnt an aromatic grape. what it does deliver is this subtle purity with hints of white fruit, white peach, crab apples, chalky soil notes and a fine base of sweet dried floral notes. Bright and focused in the mouth, this has a fine mineral base on the palate with lively acids... Read More

  • Stoller Family Estate Pinot Noir Rose 2013

    Snoothrank:

Soft red cherry fruit on the nose shows subtle hints of woodsy spice and perhaps an incipient note of spicy mushroom. Round and a bit soft on entry, this is nicely balanced but shows a slightly richer, softer side of rose. The mineral tinged flavors of red cherry and hibiscus show nicely on the palate and glide onto a fresh and juicy finish wher... Read More

  • Winter's Hill Dry Rose Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Oregon 2013

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with lightly candied suggestions of red cherry and strawberry fruit that show excellent intensity and purity. Nice acids open on the palate, which shows a hint of richness and lovely, pure, and slightly savory flavors of strawberry, forest floor, and a hint of spice. Moderately large scaled and fleshy, this is beautiful with a ... Read More
