Willamette Valley AVA Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.
However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.
But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region too cool Read more »

Final pairing of the dinner at Savoy. Had this with Ahi Tuna and sauteed Mushrooms. Another terrific pairing. Opens with black and blue berries, bit of leather, oak, herbs, and dark, ripe Cherries. Nicely balanced tending toward the Herbs/Spice/Leather rather than Fruit. Excellent with plating. Read More

Sokol Blosser is known for its Dundee OR Pinot Noir, but the blends are fantastic values. This white has a panoply of white varieties such as Muller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and a host of others. The flavour tends to pear, peach and lychee - possibly suggestive of a goodly portion of Gewurztraminer. Fun stuff and good value. 87 po... Read More

  • Winter's Hill Estate Dundee Hills Pinot Gris 2013

Vanilla, green apple and pear aromas with a bit of minerality. In the mouth it's quite tart with Meyer lemon, grapefruit, and peach leading the charge and a touch of fresh green apple and pear finally finishing with a bit of an herbal note and a touch of cream.3/5 Read More

  • Winter's Hill Estate Pinot Blanc Dundee Hills 2014

Mineral and saline notes on the nose with dried apricot and green apple. In the mouth it's quite acidic and full of citrus flavors, mostly lemon and grapefruit with more saline and a bit of emollience coming later on in the form of a silky mouthfeel.3/5 Read More
