The Rogue Valley doesn’t usually receive as much attention as Oregon’s northernmost AVA, the Willamette Valley, which is unfortunate because it offers a richer diversity of climate and a wider variety of grapes.

The appellation is a series of interlocking mountain ranges and river valleys in Oregon’s southern extreme, on the California border. The valley is 70 miles wide by 60 miles long, and hosts less than 20 wineries with 1,100 acres under vine. The climate is distinctly warmer in this part of the state, although the valley hosts a wide range of macroclimates.

In the AVA’s eastern portion, heat-seeking red varietals, such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, thrive in a warm, dry climate on south-facing slopes nearly 2,000 feet in elevation. In the heart of the appellation lays Oregon’s newest AVA, Applegate Valley. Here, vineyards range from 1,000-1,500 feet, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot leading the pack in a range of varietals that flourish. In the valley’s western portion, at the base Read more »

Rogue Valley on Snooth

  • Del Rio Vineyards Muscat Rose Jolee NV

    Snoothrank:

Floral and fruity on the nose with grapefruit, floral and tropical fruit aromas. This is lightly fizzy with noticeable sweetness balanced by good acidity, but once the gas dissipates this is a bit loose and soft. Theres plenty of fruit, sort of like adult fruit punch, with cherry, pomegranate and tropical fruit tones. The finish is sweet and fai... Read More

  • A To Z Wineworks Merlot Blend Rogue Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

A refreshing and easy to drink dry Rose. Perfect for hot humid dry days. On the nose, plenty of strawberries, watermelon, bubble gum and cherries. Reminds me of a jolly rancher. Despite the sweet smells, this wine is dry. Starts off with plenty strawberry and watermelon flavors up front that continue throughout. In the middle and on the ba... Read More

  • Troon Vineyard Merlot Applegate Valley Vineyard Select Elaine's Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is intense and bright with lots of fine green herb notes, tarragon, and fennel seed all wrapped around orange washed red fruits all sitting on a freshly chopped pine tree stump in the rain. Rich and bright, this is youthfully vibrant with a lovely base of tannins and fine acidity lending the wine a firm yet fresh feel. The fruit is a touch ... Read More

I am not normally a fan of Rose wine. They are often to whimpy or too sweet for me. It was bright and juicy without being too fruity. I liked it. Read More
