for this region?

The Umpqua Valley is famous for its natural beauty and world renowned fishing. It is also an important viticultural region in Oregon. The Umpqua Valley not only separates the Willamette Valley AVA to the north and the Rogue Valley AVA to the south, but also represents the median of Oregon’s climate.

The region is cooler than the Rogue Valley and distinctly warmer than the Willamette Valley to the north. Bordered to the east by the Cascade Mountains and the west by the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley is cooled by Pacific breezes flowing along the Umpqua River. Vineyards are mostly found below 1,000 feet and are planted to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and a scattering of French American hybrids. A vineyard’s proximity to the Coast Range can greatly affect its terroir, making generalizations about the region difficult. The region recently gained a sub-appellation, when the TTB granted AVA status to the Red Hills of Douglas County.

  • Girardet Zinfandel Umpqua Valley 2008

This tastes and smells exactly like blue punch Sweet Tarts. It's uncanny. I just had them yesterday at a kiddie birthday party and it's just a funny coincidence. The "tart" part I find interesting because I have never had an Oregon zinfandel, nor a tart one. The difference between oregon and sonoma zin is fascinating. Read More

  • Brandborg Riesling Umpqua Valley 2008

Lean smelling with layered notes of crisp apple fruit under white floral tones and hints of river stones. Sweet on entry but very Kabinett-like with good acidity and a lovely, light bodied feel. • Brandborg Pinot Noir Umpqua Valley Bench Lands 2007

With autumnal accents of dried herb and campfire helping to frame the floral, strawberry toned fruit, this smells enticing. On the palate this is cool and fresh with excellent purity and richness that incorporates a touch of leafiness into a package of crunchy red, wild strawberry fruit that leads to a solid, fresh finish. Definitely a bit on th... Read More

  • Torii Mor Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Olalla 2008

Smoky on the nose with hints of dried meats, teriyaki, and even a slight undertone of ketchup. Very savory and dried smelling. On the palate this is big and rich with big, ripe tannins supporting blackberry and black currant fruit tones. The acidity remains refreshing ans the tannins savory and firm through the mid-palate and the powerful finish... Read More
