for this region?

The Umpqua Valley is famous for its natural beauty and world renowned fishing. It is also an important viticultural region in Oregon. The Umpqua Valley not only separates the Willamette Valley AVA to the north and the Rogue Valley AVA to the south, but also represents the median of Oregon’s climate.

The region is cooler than the Rogue Valley and distinctly warmer than the Willamette Valley to the north. Bordered to the east by the Cascade Mountains and the west by the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley is cooled by Pacific breezes flowing along the Umpqua River. Vineyards are mostly found below 1,000 feet and are planted to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and a scattering of French American hybrids. A vineyard’s proximity to the Coast Range can greatly affect its terroir, making generalizations about the region difficult. The region recently gained a sub-appellation, when the TTB granted AVA status to the Red Hills of Douglas County.

  • Pazo San Mauro Albariño Rías Baixas 2009

Lightly leesy on the nose with lovely, transparent citrus rind and pear tones accented with smoky, quartz notes and gentle green background notes. Nicely taut in the mouth with excellent clarity to the pear and mineral tones that drive through on the lean but flavorful finish. This exhibits lovely balance with all the fruit, mineral and struct... Read More

  • Henry Estate Müller-Thurgau 2007

i enjoyed this recently at our local wine club. the label tag says "apple blossoms, peach, citrus, melon." i'm not that good. i managed to pick up the peach. it was nice and smooth, with a little bit of carbonation added to it, so it still finished pretty crisp. not really acidic. Read More

  • River's Edge Pinot Gris Pace Family Vyd Umpqua Valley 2007

First of all, the fact that it is a single vineyard white wine is what draw me into trying it out in the first place. You can tell this is a wine made with care. Upfront a nose of citrus and pineapple and is it opens mineral and petrol. In mouth good structured acidity balance and medium aftertaste. Read More

  • Girardet Zinfandel Umpqua Valley 2008

This tastes and smells exactly like blue punch Sweet Tarts. It's uncanny. I just had them yesterday at a kiddie birthday party and it's just a funny coincidence. The "tart" part I find interesting because I have never had an Oregon zinfandel, nor a tart one. The difference between oregon and sonoma zin is fascinating. Read More

  • Brandborg Riesling Umpqua Valley 2008

Lean smelling with layered notes of crisp apple fruit under white floral tones and hints of river stones. Sweet on entry but very Kabinett-like with good acidity and a lovely, light bodied feel. The citrus and green apple fruit is very pure and clean feeling with some fine edge details of herbs and flowers adding nice complexity and offering goo... Read More
