The Umpqua Valley is famous for its natural beauty and world renowned fishing. It is also an important viticultural region in Oregon. The Umpqua Valley not only separates the Willamette Valley AVA to the north and the Rogue Valley AVA to the south, but also represents the median of Oregon’s climate.

The region is cooler than the Rogue Valley and distinctly warmer than the Willamette Valley to the north. Bordered to the east by the Cascade Mountains and the west by the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley is cooled by Pacific breezes flowing along the Umpqua River. Vineyards are mostly found below 1,000 feet and are planted to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and a scattering of French American hybrids. A vineyard’s proximity to the Coast Range can greatly affect its terroir, making generalizations about the region difficult. The region recently gained a sub-appellation, when the TTB granted AVA status to the Red Hills of Douglas County.

Umpqua Valley on Snooth

  • Abacela Albarino 2014

Mineral, flinty notes of citrus and peach on the nose with a hint of green apple as well. Good fresh acidity and a zesty character in the mouth, with notes of green apple, tangerine, lemon and peach, finishing long with an extra mineral finish. Excellent wine to bring to the raw bar. Read More

  • Abacela Grenache Rose 2014

Fresh watermelon, herb and mineral notes on the nose with pale cherry aromas and a bit of hay. Bursting with cherry and watermelon flavors, there's a good zestiness to the palate and a touch of cream to round it out, a very clean and easy drinking wine with a zip of perceived sweetness coming from the ripe fruit and zesty mouthfeel. Sweet/tart on the nose with candied yet tart aromas of citrus framed with a woodsy almost vanilla note and some cherry candy elements. fairly dry in the mouth, this has plenty of body and comes off as feeling fairly powerful and rich while delivering a hint of apricot layered over deep mineral and slightly herbal flavors on the palate.
