The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

Columbia Valley on Snooth

  • Intrigue Riesling 2013

    Snoothrank:

This is a first Intrigue Wine for me, and I am very pleased to say that this Riesling has a wonderful green apple peel nose that fits some Nahe wines to a tee. The entry is mouth-filling with Granny Smith apple, sprinkled with canned pear and plenty of bracing acidity. Finish is medium and your tongue keeps calling for more. Superb effort; sup... Read More

  • Church & State Wines Viognier 2013

    Snoothrank:

Another fine Church and State Wines offering... with a fine domestic flower scent (Wisteria, petunia, for example) with some spice such as nutmeg. The palate receives a princely flow of cake spice, peach, vanilla (light oak) and tropical fruit with good viscosity, creaminess and no bitterness - almost like petit Chateau Grillet. 14.3% alcohol a... • Painful to watch Brian! Hopefully some better wines are coming your way...well, ... out of Washington's vast Columbia Valley. The nose is pleasant, and somewhat expressive, showing some earth, violet, purple fruit, with a little muskiness. Medium bodied, with good black and green pepper, tangy, fresh fruit. The oak treatment screams neutral, tho... Read More

  • Browne Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2012

    Snoothrank:

Pleasant honeyed aromas of golden raisins, baked apples and pears are inviting and warm with apple pie spice. Flavors are mild, with green apple, lemon and some buttery cream, not a lot of acidity to speak of so the palate relies mostly on the clean, fresh fruit and gentle oak treatment. 86 pts. Read More

  • Figured it would be easy to fool you on the top photo. It's actually ... ... the Walla Walla part of the Columbia Valley appellation, but now that I actually look at it I realize it's from Yakima Valley. • Church and State Wines Trebella 2013

    Snoothrank:

Again, with these white Rhone-style whites from British Columbia Canada, there is intriguing Camomile Tea and peach with hints of pear, kiwi and other soft fruit. Good viscosity (mouth feel) with peach and some almond-like bitterness on the finish. Lacking only a bit of purity. Excellent value. 89 points Read More

  • Church and State Wines Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2012

    Snoothrank:

The nose of this wine is a,an intriguing vanilla, filbert and spiced apple - appropriate for the season. On the palate, there is a soft vanilla (oak), slightly tart apple and ginger flavour bundle. The finish is warm and the warmth lingers - along with soft, spicy tannin. Elegant but slightly heady. Good value. 89 points. Tasted at Kensingt... Read More
