The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

Columbia Valley on Snooth

  • Dusted Valley Malbec Columbia Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Dark plum and fig aromas with candied strawberry and black cherry notes. Full of earthy baking spice on the palate, this is focused and full bodied with medicinal cherry and blackberry notes coming through towards the finish that ends with a floral note of raspberry and cherry compote. • Northstar Columbia Valley Merlot 2012

    Snoothrank:

Had this at lunch at Marcello's Chophouse the other day. Interesting - I asked the waitperson to pick something to go with the Lobster Bisque - it is dark and inky and opens like a herb/slate forward Pinot. There was a lightness there, that led me to believe it was the Pinot...Being as suggestable as I am, when I asked what the wine was, a Merlo... Read More

  • Perseus Invictus 2013

    Snoothrank:

The Perseus Invictus 2013 is a powerful, warm Bordeaux-style red with a deep, palpable flavour profile reminiscent of Graves. While not heavy-handed, the oak is forward on both nose and palate (youthful, slightly tight, tannic). But upon decanting, the nose has cedar, tobacco and cherry notes; may need 3-4 years cellaring to reach full potentia... Read More
