The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

  • Maryhill Winery Proprietor's Reserve Tavola Rosso Columbia Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Sweet molasses and maple syrup aromas with ripe cherry and strawberry fruit on the nose. Dry and sticky in the mouth, this carries an herbal backbone throughout with tarry minerality, loamy earth and good structure. Fruit flavors are darker than the palate and carrying blackberry and black cherry along with a dark chocolate and roasted espresso ... Read More

  • Helix Sangiovese Stillwater Creek Vineyard Columbia Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Toasted smoke aromas of dried earth and dried cranberries. This is fresher on the palate with red fruit flavors of cranberry, strawberry and red current and dark smoky earth that finishes the wine with a chewy tannic bite. Definitely a refreshing wine. Read More

  • Ryan Patrick Redhead Red 2015

Perfumed aromas of violets, ripe cherries and strawberries. Unassuming and simple on entry, this has a pleasant chalky earth that brings strawberry, cherry syrup and cranberry fruit and finishes with a sticky resinous smoke. Read More

  • 8th Generation Syrah 2014

    Snoothrank:

8th Generation is a family winery in Summerland BC producing a range of excellent whites and some reds, such as this Syrah, which elicits a few whiffs of coffee and strawberry on the nose, followed by a tart, food-friendly mouth feel and palate effect. Balance is sufficiently absent to say that a bit more work is needed. But great with Tourtie... Read More
