The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

Columbia Valley on Snooth

  • La Frenz Naramata Bench Chardonnay Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

The talented Jeff Martin makes this delicious Chard in a (rather) Cali style - with prominent oak (but not too, too prominent), a sweet entry with ample vanilla, butterscotch, apple and tropical fruit such as mango. This is a fine wine for the price, the only distraction being the gentle northern Chardonnay being a teeny bit overpowered by the ... Read More

  • Township 7 Cabernet Sauvignon Blue Terrace Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

This 2010 entry from Township 7 (originally headquartered at Langley BC Canada - but with vineyards in Naramata) is a nice, medium-bodied, sound Cab with a hint of acidity, precipitated tannin, coffee and tasty blackberry notes; the balance is good and nose is leather plus black fruit such as mentioned. Very good value, but drink now. 87 points. Read More

  • Orofino Beleza 2007

    Snoothrank:

This Bordeaux style blend rounding out nicely with just a whiff of oak upon uncorking; there is then a good supply of blackberry, plum, and vanilla both on the nose and on entry. Like some Washington and BC Merlot-Cabernet blends, there is some lack of depth (core), but this is the nature of the beast. A decent wine, but drink up. 87 points Read More

  • Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah 2008

    Snoothrank:

Pretty interesting wine. Quite different from the California style for a Bordeaux blend. (Well, duh.) That might be from the lack of Cabernet Sauvignon. First of all, it is a very attractive bluish-purple in the glass. Big, fruity nose of blackberry and (I know there is no CS.) currant. On the tongue I get that initial blast of black fruit,... • Hedges Cellars Three Vineyards Red Mountain 2011

    Snoothrank:

It has been a while since anything from the Red Mountain AVA has passed my lips, but the Hedges 3 Vineyards was available at the Safeway in Mt. Vernon WA, so... you know what came next (or should). This (mostly) Meritage blend (there is a 16% Syrah component) evokes smoky oak, blackberry and deep-roast coffee. On entry, there is cassis, cherry... Read More

  • Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay 2013

    Snoothrank:

Simple but nice Washington state chardonnay. Clean and crisp with some decent lemon cream notes and just a touch of pear. Fairly light but decent acidity and a short finish. Very good QPR. Read More

  • Columbia Crest Grand Estates Chardonnay 2012

    Snoothrank:

After seeing praise for this wine, I had to try it. The nose has noticeable toast and honey notes but the fruit is dominated by the oak. There just isn't enough fruit to come through the oak. Been drinking Chardonnay for 40 years now and must say, this is no 90 point wine. Short finish and simple. My rating-- 84 Read More

  • Seven Hills Winery Mcclellan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely deep violet in the glass with great clarity. The nose is quite nice, with aromas of leather over some ripe boysenberry and cherry notes and just a hint of dried herbs. The taste is just wonderful, with a rather subdued bit of fruit up front, berries and cherry that quickly gives way to some lovely mineral notes midpalate, ... Read More

  • Terravista Vineyards Fandango 2013

    Snoothrank:

This wine is the colour of many Rías Baixas wines I've enjoyed over the years and is quite redolent of that familiar peach and ginger I remember - notwithstanding the credit-worthy Verdejo component. Good acidity and more peach on the palate with a fruity, lingering finish. Some bitterness on the follow-through, but this is a most elegant wine... Read More

  • Chateau Ste. Michelle Harvest Select Sweet Riesling 2013

    Snoothrank:

Nice nectarine nose but a fairly simple wine. Needs a bit more acid to balance the sugar. No botrytis complexity as one would like to see from a late harvest Riesling. A bit awkward. My rating--86. Read More
