for this region?

The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

  • Ryan Patrick Ryan's Riesling 2013

Classic riesling phenolics on the nose with pleasant aromatics of lemon and pineapple with floral notes as well. Cool ripe apple and tangerine flavors in the mouth, showing a nice touch of sweetness and tart spice flowing through as well, leaving a warming spice and touches of yeast and pleasant minerality on the finish. • Wild Meadows Red Beauty 2011

Lightly herbal red fruit aromas of raspberry and strawberry. Jammy licorice and ripe black cherry flavors in the mouth, this has a fair bit of cinnamon spice and vanilla as well as blueberry fruit syrup, soft violet and milk chocolate notes towards the finish, which is medium-short but leaves some tannins behind. • Culmina Hypothesis 2011

The 2011 Culmina is quite a surprise - there is a certain mute element on the nose (slightly closed) but with lightweight cassis. The entry is quite light in body, but with light, attractive tannin and demi-sec blackberry flavors. The wine is clean, pure and promises even better results down the line. Tastes like a St.-Estephe wine... Pricy, b... Read More
