The Columbia Valley AVA is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Included within its confines are six other American Viticultural Areas (AVA) including Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills and Wahluke Slope. The Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound AVAs are the only appellations in Washington that fall outside of its borders. Despite the number of sub-appellations within its boundaries, there is the potential for further AVA development. The most significant places where the Columbia Valley is the primary appellation and does not overlap another AVA are the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin, and the vast expanse north of the Rattlesnake Hills, which includes the entire region loosely called Columbia Cascade.

Apart from its sheer size, the Columbia valley is also widely seen on wine labels because many of Washington’s best known wineries are located in the Seattle metropolitan area. These wineries transport grapes over Read more »

  • 8th Generation Pinot Noir 2013

    Snoothrank:

8th Generation is a well-respected producer of Germanic-styled wines in Summerland BC. This PN is no exception; the style is seems German, but slightly deeper, smokier and rubbery; get past the smoke and rubber and you have cooked strawberry, with a vanilla/tannin finish. If the German style is the objective, all is well. 86-87 points. Read More

  • Gray Monk Pinot Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

I received this modestly priced Pinot Blanc from a family friend at a reception honouring a recently deceased relative. Since I had not had any wine from the Heiss family holdings in years, I looked forward to updating my knowledge of this beautiful vineyard and its produce. I was not disappointed: the wine is almost chardonnay-like with apple... Read More

Soft tropical notes of mango, melon and banana with white peach and green apple. Unoaked yet still creamy on the palate, showcasing bright clean peach, tangerine and melon fruit, focused acidity leading to a tart, lively finish. Read More

  • La Frenz Naramata Bench Chardonnay Reserve 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 edition of the La Frenz Reserve (Naramata Bench) Chardonnay is a lovely expression of the grape in a British Columbia setting - the very gentle mineral-based apple and pear flavours emerge from the chewy oak which might be a teeny bit heavy. Still, the wine hits the palate much like a Chilean alternative - but with a more delicacy and ... Read More

  • Vintage Ink 2013

    Snoothrank:

Vintage inky coloration, clarity is good, and just slightly brown hues around the rim. The aromas remind me of a Cab Sauv. and are of dark berry, chocolate, slightly boozy, and hints of strawberry sweetness. Flavors follow suit, and are jammy, strawberry, vanilla, woody oak and overall is nice! The mouthfeel is medium body, with smooth silky... Read More
