is the deepest of the 11 Finger Lakes. With a maximum depth of 600 feet, this 35-mile-long body of water in the heart of New York wine country does not freeze. Instead, it acts as a heat storage unit, warming the growing region year round. This warming effect is largely responsible for the success of the area’s flourishing wine industry. With more than 30 wineries, the Seneca Lake AVA sprawls across 204,600 acres, with 3,700 acres under vine. Best known for its Riesling, the area also produces a range of other wines that are earning international recognition. The region hosts the successful Seneca Lake Winery Trail, which encircles the entire lake. The eighth appellation in New York State, Seneca Lake is one of the most recent AVAs approved by the BATF in North America. Effective September 2, 2003, local wineries were permitted to display this designation on their labels. At the lake head is Geneva’s agricultural experiment station, responsible for many of the commercially successful hybrid varieties Read more »

  • Red Newt Cellars Red Blend Finger Lakes Viridescens NV

This is possibly one of the worst wines I have ever drank. We had a bottle given to us as a gift. It has no legs and is really light in colour, with a mild berry flavour. It has an almost syntheti aftertaste. Both me and my wife, after sharing a bottle both had the worst headaches the following day. We are both wine drinkers and never suffer lik... Read More

  • Atwater Estate Vineyards Dry Riesling 2010

The nose showed lemon pith, peach, salty grating cheese, minerals and wet stones. On the palate, it was crisp with a citrusy acidic bite and flavors of green apple and lemon. I found great balance here with the perfect mix of ripe fruit and mouthwatering acidity. The finish was clean and crisp with a lingering note of tart apple and lemon. Read More

  • Lamoreaux Landing Riesling Seneca Lake Dry 2008

Pours a bright clear light golden color. Nice aromas of light fruit such as apricots/peaches/apples. Starts off with a nice amount of green apple and peaches. In the middle, more of the same with some citrus undertones. Finishes with more peaches and apples. Has a light body that leaves a light fruit taste on the palate. Read More
