New York Wine

Though the first successful North American wine production is often credited to California, New York is where the industry was first pioneered in the United States. The Dutch and Huguenot settlers were the first to cultivate wine grapes in the 16th century. The oldest continuously operating winery, the Brotherhood Winery (which produces strictly sacramental wines, which is how they got around the Prohibition), first known as Jacques Brothers, was established in 1837. The country’s first bonded winery, the Pleasant Valley Wine Company (also known as the Great Western Wine Company), was established in the 1860s in Steuben County.

For a long time, New York wines languished behind the high reputations of its west coast rivals. Most of the wines produced were labrusca varieties such as Concord, Diamond and Baco Noir, mostly in sweet styles that were embraced by certain drinkers, but ignored by much of the “serious” wine community. New York on Snooth

  • Bloomer Creek Gamay Noir Finger Lakes 2006

    Snoothrank:

A touch of earth and cherry on the nose. Earth continues through the palate, with some soft fruits. A deeper Gamay than many, more body, and some nice tannins on the finish (long finish). Actually, almost fleshy - like a Morgon Beaujolais Cru. Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Cafe Red Finger Lakes 2006

    Snoothrank:

Pepper and spice all round - starting with a pronounced nose of chilli peppers and white peppers. The peppers continue, although there's some green peppers too. Overall, despite the prior description, this is a soft wine with light tannins. Long finish on the tannins. A good picnic wine? Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Pinot Noir Finger Lakes 2006

    Snoothrank:

Very light in color. Strong aromas of raspberry and some nice earthyness. Strong Strawberry flavors dominate in the mouth. Overall a very light wine (a touch tight, but still young). A nice long finish on some very gentle tannins. Very nice. Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Vineyard Chardonnay Seneca Lake 2006

    Snoothrank:

A very Burgundian wine - a touch of oak, but 50% aged in steel. The rest is aged in old oak. O nthe palate there is some soft oak, peach and stone fruit notes followed by a long finish on spice. Ultimately, not a lot of fruit - but, like i said, its avery European style. A good food wine. Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Vineyard Finger Lakes Riesling 2006

    Snoothrank:

Kim Engle makes very European style wines, a bit of a rarity in the Finger Lakes. This is one of his better ones - a dry, low alcohol (11%) Riesling. Very oily with good minerality, typical of an Alsatian Riesling (petrol, mineral and a nice rubbery-ness). A nice spicy, cloves, finish. Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Vineyard Gewurztraminer Finger Lakes 2006

    Snoothrank:

Opens with a nose of peach and tropical fruits. This is quite restrained for a Gewurtz - much less floral than some. Some delicate floral tastes with nice spice on the finish. A good introduction to Gewurztraminer, or ideal for those turned off by cloying floral wines. Tasted at the winery. Read More

  • Bloomer Creek Vineyard Reserve White Finger Lakes 2006

    Snoothrank:

A nose of light peach and minerals. Some tangerine notes here too. This is a crisp, light wine, with some nice subtle minerality, a touch of spice and a long and pleasant finish. Very well priced. Tasted at the Winery. Read More
