The state of Massachusetts hosts more than a dozen wineries, scattered from its western end to the coastal areas south of Boston, as well as on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands. Grape growing in the state is concentrated on coastal lands within the Southeastern New England AVA. In other parts of the state, fruit wines are more common and grape wines are often made from fruit imported from other parts of the U.S. The cold-climate conditions make French-American hybrid varieties like Seyval, Vidal, and Marechal Foch popular choices with growers. But some important producers have exclusively vinifera programs, focusing on varieties like Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. Given the growing conditions and varieties, it is not surprising to find excellent, Traditional Method sparkling wines made in the state. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Liberty School Chardonnay 2011

    Snoothrank:

Bright pale yellow colour. Pear, stone fruit, citrus/lime and apple combine with subtle oak and butter notes- lots of fruit well balanced with acidity. Medium-long length and slightly tangy finish. Read More

  • Frei Brothers Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

A little candied on the nose, and ripe with peachy aromas layered over a base of softly floral framed citrus fruits and a hint of honeydew with a gentle suggestion of vanilla adding detail. Fairly large scaled in the mouth, and on the softer side of the spectrum, this does not lack for acid but does have a bit of a creamy feel in the mouth. The... Read More

  • Ridge Zinfandel Lytton Springs 2010

    Snoothrank:

Something of a sour viney nose. I'm not getting much fruit flavor on the palate at all. Super stark drying sensation, mostly. I may require more air. A bit bitter on the back of the palate. I like the lack of fruitiness, but you have to really like lean wines to enjoy this one. US$27.99 at Packing House Wine Merchants in Claremont. Amendm... Read More

  • Hecht & Bannier Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2010

    Snoothrank:

A really exciting wine on the nose with lots of depth and complexity: meaty/gamey notes combine with lots of berry fruit and floral/perfumed violet notes. Would have liked to see more of the same depth/complexity on the palate. Still great though, with lots of plummy fruit and savoury notes that's well balanced with good acidity and soft tannins...
