Green Valley Wine

 

The Green Valley AVA is in the west corner of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, in California’s North Coast. Due to its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, it’s prone to dense fog and cool temperatures, but these factors ensure a long growing season with balanced acidity and proper ripening in the grapes. 

 

Green Valley shares much of its early history with other parts of Sonoma and Russian River. Early plantings began in the mid 1800s with the first settlers, a fruitful period of wine-making into the 20th century, then a near collapse due to Phylloxera, the Prohibition and the Great Depression when most wineries were forced to shut down and pursue other crops. 

 

Then a period of regrowth finally took hold starting in the 1960s and 70s with wineries established by the Dutton family, Sterling family and Rodney Strong (Iron Horse).
