Russian River Valley Wine

The Russian River Valley is the most southerly AVA within Northern Sonoma. It is named for the influx of Russian immigrants who, between 1812 and 1841, settled along the Sonoma coast, establishing agricultural businesses including the planting of wine grapes. Beginning at Fort Ross they moved up to Sebastopol, Graton and Freestone, eventually settling in what would become Russian River Valley.

Most of the Russian settlers abandoned the area by 1841, but other settlers had already migrated there and continued to support viticultural plantings. By the 1870s, the wine industry began to take hold and companies such as the Santa Rosa Wine Company, Martini and Prati, Korbel Cellars and Foppiano established longstanding wineries.

The Prohibition was a devastating blow to the region, but there were some survival techniques employed by certain wineries to get around the problem. The Alicante-Bouchet grape from Europe, know for its unique teinturier (naturally dark, heavily pigmented juice without Read more »

Russian River Valley on Snooth

  • Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Rich, deep black cherry aromas that deliver incredible depth of fruit and are only slightly tempered by floral spice. In the mouth, this is decorated with black cherry and red currant notes, a touch of medicine, and baking spice leading up to the oak and smoky wood spice on the finish. Read More

  • Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Warm, thick fruit forward aromas of baked apple, pear and vanilla caramel with some lemon hiding against the spice. This is a bit thin in the mouth but bursting with acidity, candied lemon drop notes towards the front of the palate, cream and butter towards the back and a warm stone fruit blend of peach and dried apricot welling up at the finish. • Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Grassy notes of golden berries, lemon zest and peach on the nose. Delicate on entry, this develops a tart acidity through the mid-palate and shows more lemon zest, white peach and blossom notes with a green note of beeswax and cut lawn towards the finish. Read More

  • J Vineyards Cuvee 20 Premier NV

    Snoothrank:

Lemon, pear and green apple fruit aromas with soft biscuit notes and a touch of cream. Pleasant mousse in the mouth with honeyed apple and tart pear notes with more lemon and grapefruit notes blossoming towards the finish that lingers for quite a while with notes of pineapple and vanilla cream. • Limerick Lane Zinfandel Rocky Knoll 2013

    Snoothrank:

Reddish purple color. Bright nose of stone fruit. Sure enough, serious ripe red plum flavor on the tip of the tongue. Some hint of bitter spiceclove-like. However, that may be the tannin. This is, pretty much, a tannic beast. However, it also has nice tart acid. I am seriously liking this wine, right now. However, the tannin and acid com... Read More

  • Deloach 'Russian River Valley' Zinfandel 2012

    Snoothrank:

Wonderful zin, though not the big & ballsy style that many are used to. This is more refined and elegant than rustic. Plenty of briary blackberry aromas with spice, vanilla aromas, dried red berry filling it out. There is plenty of zip to the content with it's acidity and the tannins frame well. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More
