Knights Valley Wine

Knights Valley is a wine region in Northern Sonoma in the North Coast of California. It’s named for pioneer Thomas Knight, who settled in the area in 1845 after all of his belongings were destroyed in a wagon explosion that left him strapped. But he found his calling in agriculture, and was so successful that he was able to buy Rancho Mallacomes from Jose de los Santos Berryessa in 1853 and planted grapevines, among other crops. By the 1880s, Knights Valley had a thriving wine scene until the triple threat of Phylloxera, the Prohibition and the Great Depression took its toll on the industry.

But the region eventually made its comeback and today is home to many world-class wineries. Well-drained alluvial soil from nearby Mount St. Helena and warm temperatures create perfect growing conditions for the full-bodied red wines produced there from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Mourvedre. The main white varietals produced there are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. ~Amanda Schuster

  • Murphy-Goode Poker Knight Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley 2012

Full and ripe blackberry, blueberry and black cherry aromas on the nose with a touch of powdered sugar and moist earth. Blackberry, toast and vanilla flavors lead the way with molasses, forest floor, dark chocolate and leather. The tannins are strong but well integrated with the fruit. An age worthy wine but very easy to drink now and quite smooth. Read More

  • Matanzas Creek Winery Sauvignon Blanc Helena Bench Vineyard 2013

Grassy peach and marmalade aromas are light and feathery on the delicate nose of this wine. In the mouth, tart acidity matches perfectly with a mineral, saline touch of flint and candied orange peel with lemon notes and a lightly creamy finish of herb butter. Very nice. Read More

  • Clos du Bois Knights Valley Petite Sirah Sonoma Reserve 2011

This is not the best for the price point. It's full of blackberry and mellow tannins but that's about it. Perhaps it needs more time in the bottle to round out. Basically I expected more complexity but's an average nice tasting wine with no special depth Read More

  • We tried a $20 French Rose last night (Michel Chapoutier Bila-Haut) while visiting my wife's parents (our weekly Wednesday dinner where we bring the meal and they provide a salad).  Picked this one up at the local Whole Foods to accompany some Thai food (not spicy for her parents) and it was decent, although not chilled.  I was happy to find one... Tremendous gem from Knights Valley. Deep dark in color and a good mid palate with wonderful floral notes on the nose. This was my first Anakota, and hopefully not my last. It stood up well to some big competiton the likes of Dancing Hare and 100 Acre. Cheers! Read More

We are next door to Morlet on one s...
