Just when you’ve finally figured out the criss-cross of Sonoma County’s 12 sub-appellations here is one more. Sonoma Countys' newest appellation, Bennett Valley, is located completely within the North Coast AVA, almost completely within Sonoma Valley, and partially crossing over into the Sonoma Coast and Sonoma Mountain AVAs. A petition for the proposed viticultural area was filed in October of 2001 with Jean Arnold, CEO of Matanzas Creek Winery leading the way. There were no letters of comment received and therefore, effective December 29, 2003, the Bennett Valley AVA went into effect. Bennett Valley is an 8,140 acre viticultural area with 650 acres currently planted to varietals such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Barbera, Grenache, and Sauvignon Blanc. It is surrounded by the Sonoma Mountain Range on three sides and the city of Santa Rosa to the north. Crane Canyon to the southwest is a gap between Sonoma Mountain and Taylor Mountain Read more »

  • Looks like a good snag, Fox, and you've gotta put things in perspective:--five of those sparklers in place of one Goldeneye 10 Degrees--four of those sparklers in place of one of the Duckhorn merlots Substitute for two of those Duckhorns and you can have a decent party!Sorry, Al, but those prices for the juice they're delivering are just waaaaaa... • Matanzas Creek Winery Sauvignon Blanc Bennett Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Tropical banana and mango aromas flanked by peach and lemon notes and a pleasant minerality. Bursts with acidity on the attack, leading to some perceived sweetness but finishes tart and lemony with puckering acidity and a whisp of peach and apricot on the long finish. Read More

  • Maclaren Wines Maclaren Syrah Judge Family Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Not bad but not great Sonoma (Bennett Valley) syrah. Dark ripe berries on the nose with a hint of tobacco. Lots of ripe blackberry, a bit of earthiness, some cola, ripe black cherry and a touch of cedar on the palate. The acidity is fairly bright but the tannins are a bit short and the finish is of medium length. Read More
