Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

Alexander Valley on Snooth

  • Daryl Rex Groom Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Just a lovely Wine. Opens with Chocolate, Clove, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon. Continues with a Raspberry compote and more Chocolate. Long, long finish with soft tannins and good acidity. Sitting in the glass, continues to develop more with deeper complexity of smoke and spice. Incredible value at the Angel pricing of $15.99 Read More

  • Marietta Cellars Petite Sirah California 2009

    Snoothrank:

Big rip fruit yet elegant and refined at the same time. This isn't the typical Petite Sirah where it's full bore right out of the gate. It's polished and reserved while still offering reasonable amounts of big fruit. The tannins are there but are very well integrated into the wine. Black and blue fruits with balanced oak provide wonderful balanc... Read More

  • Going for what over the years has been a pretty reliable label: 2010 ... ... ... Seghesio Home Ranch Alexander Valley Zinfandel.  This one hits the sweet Zinfandel spot for me.  Significant blackberry/blueberry fruit on the tip of the tongue, but this fruitiness is modulated by stiff tannin.  Then the acid makes me crave another sip.  Good jo... • Murphy-Goode Single Deck Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Powerfully aromatic nose of candied raspberry, blackberry and black cherry. A bit restrained in the mouth, with tight, gripping tannins out ahead of the fruit, which shows nicely on the mid palate of blackberry, black currant, leather, espresso beans, and a touch of tar. This is a powerful Cabernet and for lovers of this style of wine it's a rea... Read More
