Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

  • Rodney Strong Rockaway Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

This takes a while to open up in the glass, but as it does it blossoms with crushed violet, black currant and black cherry notes, austere earth and smoke, and baking spice. In the mouth it's rich and velvety, with touches of dried fig and fresh plum, blackberry and black cherry and loads of spice. This is a big wine which is well balanced and su... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

This broad shouldered wine is chalky and rich on the nose with a fair bit of heat blowing off straight from the bottle, and surprisingly delicate ripe black cherry and black currant aromas with deep vanilla notes framed with cedar. A rich wine in the mouth with loads of dark chocolate and rich vanilla notes, highlighting the cherry and blackberr... Read More

  • Daryl Rex Groom Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Just a lovely Wine. Opens with Chocolate, Clove, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon. Continues with a Raspberry compote and more Chocolate. Long, long finish with soft tannins and good acidity. Sitting in the glass, continues to develop more with deeper complexity of smoke and spice. Incredible value at the Angel pricing of $15.99 Read More
