Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

Alexander Valley on Snooth

  • D, the "observed" incidences of doing blinds--not anecdotes of ... ... different bottles of Napa or Alexander Valley tossed in, a couple from a vintage that wasn't the vintage of the decade/century/millenium--then you actually get a little honesty in the game. So a few people got 10 - 12 out of 12.  I would love to see the score cards, but kee... • Trentadue Winery la Storia Petite Sirah 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine of the night on round the world tour for some new people to the PFWC wine cellar. This actually could have sat for another yr or two, but it is big and bold right now and drinking well. Blackberries, dirt and pepper with large tannins and properly scaled acidity makes the mouth go POP! The aftertaste is large and extended. This is why I... Read More

  • Ferrari-Carano Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Blackberry and rich baking spice on the nose with some soft earth and notes of candied plum. This shows a good herbal note in the mouth and powerful fruit notes of dark blackberry preserves, black currant and black cherry, chewy tannins and nice balance. Very creamy on the finish with lovely vanilla notes and a hint of black pepper and cedar. Read More

  • Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay 2013

    Snoothrank:

Finally, an affordable, bold, oak-infused Chardonnay worthy of fine food pairings! I find that when Chardonnay is aged in stainless steel it imparts a sterile, acidic quality that makes the wine less memorable. Allowing the Chardonnay grapes to age in oak, as here, lends complexity and resonance to the wine. Read More

Powerfully spiced clove, cinnamon and vanilla cream pours off the nose with deep and rich blackberry and black currant notes. • Folie a Deux Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Deep dark fruits, alcohol and cedar on the nose. Chewy notes of black fruits, dried herbs, and vanilla. Smokey notes of cedar accented by a mild tingly black pepper. This solid medium cab offers a nice long finish with a bit of graphite that sits at the front of the palate. If you're a huge cab fan this one will be middle of the road (probably) b... Read More
