Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

  • Scherrer Winery Chardonnay Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very similar to the '09, just going to paste my TNs from that one - This is a big, fresh, juicy, Russian River chardonnay. It is well balanced with apricot, honey, ripe pear, ripe apple, nice acidity and a touch of oak. This has great mouth feel and a wonderfully long finish. Read More

Deep inky red color. Aromas are quite pronounced, with black currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit and an herbal note of eucalyptus. Very full mouthfeel, deep and rioe with blackberry fruit, cinnamon and clove, supple tannins, black olive and more than a hint of toast. Some coffee notes, dark cacao nibs and overall an elegant presentation d... Read More

  • Special treat tonight - a very nice 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Moone Tsai ... that is comparable to the Alexander Valley Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon.  I still think the Napa Valley Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon is better though.  Lots of fruit up front but structured tanins.  It has a significant kick with an alcohol level of 15.1% so be p...
