Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

Alexander Valley on Snooth

  • Sorry, Mark, Doty has managed to garner lots of publicity, but his cites over ... a homogenized bomb like an Alexander Valley Silver Oak. Since I won't be able to smell it I'll imagine it's a 1982 Latour. Hopefully its over-the-top approach will allow me to sense at least some fruit, even if viscerally. Now where's the oakiest vanilla-bomb cha... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Dark blackberry aromas and black cherry preserves with an herbal note in the glass. Rich chocolate and black cherry in the mouth, with waves of chewy tannins coming in through the midpalate and adding an excellent texture to the plum and black currant flavors. On the finish this again turns a bit herbal showing some black olive notes alongside d... Read More

  • The industrial wines are no-brainers for such a list.  My mind immediately went to expensive wines that woefully under-deliver.  I've had several BC wines that were verging on $100 and were not as good as some of the $19 ones I'm drinking now.  Of course, vintage is a big part of it.  California, I'd say I will not buy the Rodney Strong Alexande... • Can I recommend that we post a picture of the bottle that we definitely would not drink again?  You can probably find a picture on the Internet if you didn't take one when you drank it (and who would take a picture of a wine you would rather forget....).  That Beringer Knight's Valley is a very good wine for the $20 price.  I'm not sure if I've ...
