Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

  • Katherine Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon Crazy Creek Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

This one was also gifted to me, and, several tastes into it, Im not terribly impressed. There is slight berry flavor around the edges of the tongue, but the tannin, cassis and body that I expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon is not there. Nothing offensive, here but Wheres the beef? Read More

  • Funny thing about these lava lamps - they were just for me to view since this ... the Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley Vineyards and the 'unknown location' Barbera that had minimal information on it's label.  None of the wines tasted cheap or corked, so I was happy about that.  For the next wine tasting party, I might specify a current... • Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2012

    Snoothrank:

Slightly herbal notes of blackberry and black cherry, with a hint of basil. Flavors are full and round, full of cassis, a bit of leather, loads of well balanced oak and cream and a nice warming heat. Finishes clean and long with a bit of tobacco, leather and cocoa powder. Read More

  • Simi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 1997

    Snoothrank:

Very much an earthy and oaky nose. On the tongue, it takes a half-second to really taste anything. This wine is, pretty much, bereft of fruit, and I am very OK with that. After those 500 milliseconds pass you realize that this wine has an incredibly soft texture. Then you get the slightest hint of currant but more woody flavors and more earthy... Read More
