Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.
But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

A deep, dark wine that's great for a chilly night. A heaping helping of dark fruits, purple lollipops, and a sweet, vaguely vanilla finish. Great with a meal. Read More

  • Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel Alexander Valley Harris Kratka Vineyard 2006

There is a pleasant blackberry hint on introduction to the palate, but nothing obnoxious. Then, I, sadly, detect over the top on the alcohol. Then there is a serious hit of tanninwith which I am very OK. After about 40 minutes of air, components seem a bit more integrated, but I still dont think its enough. Now, its tasting more jammy.
