Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

  • V V - I am truly appreciating the French wines more and more as time goes buy. ... both from Medlock Ames in Alexander Valley, CA.  We started with a 2008 Cabernet Sauvigion (which I finished today and it was lovely) and then opened the 2011 estate red that I feel still needs some time in the bottle.  Earlier this morning I participated in the... • Frei Brothers Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

    Snoothrank:

A damn fine bottle of wine. Maybe the best I've had from that winery. Plenty of firm, dark berry firm, chewy tannins and a core of cedar, chocolate and spice with good acidty for a puckering mouthwatering finish. Really good for the money. Drink or hold - Paul 91 points Read More

  • Trentadue la Storia Merlot 2012

    Snoothrank:

Not an earth shattering merlot but solid with good quality wine making behind it. A core of dark berry fruit, spice, woody notes, anise and chocolate leads to a sweetish flush of dark cherry tannins that are chewy and framing. Balanced acidity leads to a nice finish that's short but full. Drink now - Paul 88 points Read More

  • Ridge Geyserville 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting wine. For those who recall the days when a Zinfandel was characterized as brambly, this aint it. The front label indicates that this wine is 73% Zin, 17% Carignan, 9% PS and 1% Mourvedre. This is a pretty gentle wine. A fair amount of red berry fruit on introduction, but nowhere near the tannin that I would expect. Not real... Read More
