Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

Alexander Valley on Snooth

  • I can imagine the hidden powers of that Alexander Valley wine.  Nice country up there, and when I went through there last (a while back, I concede) the wines seemed to have more finesse and elegance (those based on Cabernet Sauvignon, at any rate) than all but the best from the relatively close-by Napa-Sonoma region.  There is a certain purity a... • Ridge Geyserville 2013

    Snoothrank:

Three years after my previous notes on this wine, I'm still liking it. As noted before, a light hit of red fruit--raspberry--but with no sweetness. Acid is apparent. As previously reported, tannin is somewhat sedate. I'm still calling this a medium-bodied wine, but contrary to my previous assessment, I am of the impression that more years of ... Read More

  • Marietta Cellars Angeli Estate Grown Zinfandel 2016

    Snoothrank:

Big fruity wine. Blackberry, plum are the first impression. Then some piquancy. A "thick" mouthfeel. A tobacco sensation under the rear palate--something that I might expect in a CS but not a Zin. Actually, a darned good wine. I think I'll go back and buy some more. Read More

  • Marietta Cellars Angeli Estate Grown Zinfandel 2015

    Snoothrank:

Very attractive dark color. Fruity nose with a touch of alcohol. Lots of berry fruit on the tip of the tongue. I find this to be a nice medium-for-a-red bodied wine. While it is not a blockbuster, it is not shy. Moderate tannins and acid. I found some notes on the '13 vintage of this wine in which I was not particularly impressed. I am mo... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Warm and heady aromas of blackberry and black currant. Smooth and juicy on the palate with notes of dark black currant and black cherry, this does a good job of showcasing the fruit, presenting a fresh palate through to a creamy finish with medium firm tannins. Read More

  • Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Alexander Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Creamy dark chocolate and vanilla extract aromas, oaky and full aromas with blackberries and black currant preserves. A bit of tartness on the palate to start with a creamy texture throughout, grainy tannins and milk chocolate with blackberry jam towards the finish and a fruity, vanilla palate that finishes with good length and depth. 89 pts Read More
