Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

Alexander Valley on Snooth

  • Murphy-Goode Single Deck Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Powerfully aromatic nose of candied raspberry, blackberry and black cherry. A bit restrained in the mouth, with tight, gripping tannins out ahead of the fruit, which shows nicely on the mid palate of blackberry, black currant, leather, espresso beans, and a touch of tar. This is a powerful Cabernet and for lovers of this style of wine it's a rea... Read More

  • Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Terra a Lago 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is inviting and cool on the nose with soft aromas of crushed violets, blackberries and ripe plums. In the mouth it's quite boisterous and full of fresh acidity, dark chocolate and blackberries and black currants. This is a bold wine that is not afraid to show a good bit of structure and acidity along with the fruit, making it a great candid... Read More

  • Murphy-Goode Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Big juicy bunches of blackberry and black cherry on the nose with a bit of an herbal note to it as well. In the mouth, gripping tannins hit immediately and don't let go, almost but not quite masking the blackberry and black cherry fruit with a finish of dark chocolate and coffee. It's possible this will continue to soften over time, so it may be... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

Chocolate covered almonds and blackberries give way to crushed velvet fruits; cranberry, black cherry and extra-ripe plums. The fruitiness curtails elegantly into holiday spices and milk chocolate drops. And the finish is nearly endless. Will really shine alongside a plate of hard, funky cheeses. Read More

  • Silver Oak Alexander Valley California 2010

    Snoothrank:

The wine is an inky black color at the center, leading to some bright ruby along the edges with nice clarity. The nose is just lovely, with notes of black licorice, tarragon, blueberry and some Asian spice. The taste is quite refined, with a some subdued flavors of cassis, blueberry and notes of espresso up front which transition to some elega... Read More
