Alexander Valley Wine

Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County in California, is named for pioneer Cyrus Alexander. A Pennsylvanian, he chased the gold rush to California and was hired by San Diego landowner Captain Henry Delano Fitch to survey ranch prospects. In 1840, Fitch secured a land grant from the Mexican government for Alexander to manage the Rancho Sotoyome, in what was then still a Mexican frontier. Among other crops, Alexander planted the first vineyard. By 1875, after more settlers came to the valley, more than 230 acres were devoted to vineyards.

But the crop that Alexander Valley was best known for up through the 1960s was prunes. However, because of their increasingly difficult cultivation and price competition, vineyards replaced most of the prunes. Alexander Valley gained AVA status in 1984. The cool climate region grows Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot for reds, and whites such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. ~Amanda Read more »

  • Geyser Peak Winery Bin 10 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2006

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky purple at the center, with bright ruby along the edges. The nose presents aromas of blackberry, plum and cassis overlaid with some earthy notes of leather and tar. The taste is packed with jammy fruit up front, with blueberry, plum and blackberry, that transition nicely to some notes of black pepper and spice along wit... Read More

  • Medlock Ames (Alexander Valley, CA) was our method of access to this event, as we belong to their wine club and naturally we were interested once we heard about it.  We sampled their wines of course, and club members were able to try their Snakepit that was held in reserve under the table.  We have a few of the Snakepit releases in our cellar. • Ridge Geyserville 2010

    Snoothrank:

Dark plum color. Very much an earthy nose. Light hit of candied fruit on entry. Then some sour hits. Then some bitterness. That makes for a very unusual experience. Surprising to me, but not altogether off-putting. Also interesting that this is, probably, the lightest bodied Ridge Ive ever had. A good wine, but far from my favorite from... Read More

I was wrong - Dry Creek Valley and most excellent at that.  After a quick lunch we were back on the road to Benovia.  We've tasted here before and were excited to in... Read More
