The Green Valley AVA is in the west corner of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, in California’s North Coast. Due to its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, it’s prone to dense fog and cool temperatures, but these factors ensure a long growing season with balanced acidity and proper ripening in the grapes.

Green Valley shares much of its early history with other parts of Sonoma and Russian River. Early plantings began in the mid 1800s with the first settlers, a fruitful period of wine-making into the 20th century, then a near collapse due to Phylloxera, the Prohibition and the Great Depression when most wineries were forced to shut down and pursue other crops.

Then a period of regrowth finally took hold starting in the 1960s and 70s with wineries established by the Dutton family, Sterling family and Rodney Strong (Iron Horse).

The region is known for its sparkling wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with still wines also Read more »

Sonoma County Green Valley on Snooth

  • Iron Horse Vineyards Wedding Cuvée 2009

    Snoothrank:

Dark, a bit sour fruited and citrussy on the nose then turning a little sweet and earthy with hints of Asian pear, wild cherry and dried rose petals. A very fine mousse greets the palate along with a hint of dill right up front. Elegant on the palate with lovely herbal shadings to the fruit which is a bit front loaded with fruit then turns nuanc... Read More

  • Iron Horse "Ocean Reserve" Blanc de Blancs 2009

    Snoothrank:

A very pretty nose with lots of yeasty character, fennel and fruity freshness with some vanilla notes adding some highlights. This is tense, zesty and bright in the mouth with a nice rush of clear white fruits followed by a yeasty midpalate flecked with sweet kiwi and green apple skin flavors. There's really good length here and this turns attra... Read More

  • Rhys Alesia "Green Valley" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2006

    Snoothrank:

Cola, herbs and black fruit greets the nose, this is a bit beefy and Syrah like with a popery edge. Extracted in the mouth with a little sweetness and a little alcohol throwing things out of balance. Seems like the fruit is fading leaving behind alcohol and oak. 83pts Read More

  • Green & Red Tip Top Vineyard Zinfandel 2010

    Snoothrank:

Wooly and animal on the nose with fudgy, dark earthy, leathery dark cherry fruit. Seamless and richly fruited, almost sweet on entry with fine sporting dusty tannins. This is angular and youthful with fresh black cherry and blackberry flavors that pick up a lovely bitter cherry note on the mid-palate before warm baking spices flood the finish. P... Read More

  •  We had a plan, get in early, get out early. It seems like a lot of people had the get in early plan. In years past we would show up around 11:15, park close and hit the tent before the crowd built. Well not this year. The front parking lot filled up as we approached so we parked across the road and hoofed it in. The place was a zoo from the mom... Read More

  • Dutton Goldfield Dutton Ranch Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is a fantastic Sonoma Russian River Valley chardonnay. Extremely well balanced with nice acidity, ripe citrus fruit, a slight creamy texture and a fairly long finish. After the creamy lemon front end slowly dissipates, there's a slight hint of butterscotch on the back of the tongue. Read More

  • Iron Horse Vineyards "Pinot Noir Estate" Green Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very young, brilliant - fruit forward, almost tart with notes of red cherries, strawberries/raspberries, and a very soft lemongrass undertone. Wonderful, complex bouquet. Thin and light on the palate, however, w/ not much complexity (yet)...usually would have let it sit another few years (at the least), but we were entertaining very "light pal... Read More
