  • I'm at least one person who said the merlot is best used to soften up Sangio.  It's approved for Chianti as a blender as long as it doesn't exceed 10 or 15 percent.  I can't be bothered to look up the exact number.  It's better than the bad local grapes that used to be required, although I would generally prefer that those wines be called IGT ra... • Pruett Lucky Lauren Red 2012

From the back label78% Syrah/22% Cabernet Sauvignon. Subdued nose. Some barnyard hints, some prune. On the tongue, again it takes a second to detect the sensations. Again, the fruit that emerges is prunewithout the sweetness. Mushroom earthiness. Some leatherthat might be the Cabernet Sauvignon talking. Serious tannin and serious acid sug... Read More

  •  there’s a reason why nobody ever tried to pull out these old vines. The fruit they produce is just too good. That is certainly true, but credit also has to be given to the fact that White Zinfandel became the rage thirty-something years ago, thus, saving thousands of acres of Zinfandel from being replanted to Merlot or Chardonnay.  Thank you, Su... • "When the moon hits your eye/like a big pizza pie/that's amore."As we ate our breakfast on Sunday morning at the Imperial Hotel in Amador City, the soundtrack subtly changed.  Last night at dinner and halfway through breakfast, the soundtrack was from the same era, but Sam Cooke sent us, and Ray Charles warned us about women.  This morning, with... • Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, in effect the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is the other side of those mountains.  Arroyo Seco is basically due east of Big Sur.  And there's San Antonio Valley a little further south.  (Pierce Family, whom I have touted on the "Completely Different" thread, are down there.)  Here's a nice map: http://wine.ap... • Lava Cap Zinfandel El Dorado Reserve 2010

Gently creamy oak frames dark balsam scented berry fruit on the nose. In the mouth this is rich and very focused with clear rusty red fruit and red cherry fruit supported by ripe tannins and good acids. The fruit pops on the finish, along with some gentle tannins and a finishing note of wood spice. 88pts Read More

  • Lava Cap Zinfandel El Dorado Reserve 2011

Tight and earthy on the nose, musky even with aromas of capers, smoke, bouquet garni, and rich red fruit all coming together beautifully. Bright, faceted, and vaguely mineral in the mouth this displays cherryish fruit and a bit of herb on the palate. Really gorgeously balanced, this is refined, if a bit old school with its dry edge of austerity... Read More
