San Joaquin Valley, within the county of the same name, is part of the larger Central Valley district in California. It extends from Stockton in the north to Bakersfield in the south, with the Sierra Nevada mountains in the east and the Pacific Coast Ranges in the west. The climate is typically hot and dry. Though there is limited rainfall, irrigation is sourced from a system of canals and two reservoirs.
Wine-making began in the region as California gained statehood, although it wasn’t recognized for quality production until the 1960s and 70s. Once advancements in warm-weather oenology caught on, wine-makers found ways to produce higher quality wines.
The region is known for concentrated red wines from Zinfandel, and whites from Chardonnay and Colombard.

Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2016
Snoothrank:This one pours a rusty purple hued tone, with cranberry and blueberry tinges around the outside ring. Also has an oily film that is left on the inside of the wine glass. Aromas that are superbly fruit forward, with jammy sweet berries, vanilla, peppercorn heat, hints of caramel and notes of sweet oak aging. Flavors follow suit, with more swee... Read More

Gnarly Head Old Vine Lodi Zinfandel 2014
Snoothrank:The Gnarly Head (Lodi, CA) Zinfandel is typical of its Central Valley provenance; there is a soft vanilla-cherry nose with a hint of evergreen (cedar or cypress), and entry is slightly sweetish with a ton of blueberry or bilberry on the palate, a short finish but decent balance with little heat (despite the 15% alcohol by volume.) and touch of c... Zin-Phomaniac Zinfandel Lodi 2015
Snoothrank:As has been stated by an editorial review, dusty black tea and raspberry aromas. I also picked up a sharp citrus scent which followed through, in taste, on the first glass but mellowed thereafter. Flavor wise, leans more towards blackberry, plum, and a hint of dark cherry with the black tea leaf flavor in the background. I like peppery wines and... Read More
