Lodi Wine

The Lodi wine region lies in the northern portion of California’s Central Valley, which includes San Joaquin County. The eastern portions are within the Sacramento Valley, while its western parts touch on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with noticeably cooler conditions in that section.

Lodi is known for its old vine Zinfandels, with quality production from other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. One of the more exciting trends in the region is experimentation with Spanish varietals such as Tempranillo, Graciano, and Albarino and the Portuguese Verdelho. Flame Tokay had at one time been the signature grape of the region, now fallen out of favor, but still used for brandy production.

Though Lodi itself is a subregion of Central Valley, it is further divided into the following subregions:

  • Alta Mesa
  • Borden Ranch (home of Woodbridge and Sutter Home)
  • Clements Hills
  • Cosummes River

  • Abundance Vineyards Abundantly Rich Red Mencarini Vineyards Lodi NV

I didn't see the 2004 listed so I take it that NV means not a particular year. This is a great blend. It is smooth with a very nice aroma of ripe fruits. It has a bit of a tannin hit on the tongue but that goes away as the creamy, sweetish finish takes over. This is a great drinking wine! Read More

  • Peters Family Winery Zinfandel Lodi 2001

Intense and spicy but very hot. Smooth full bodied wine. Very intense fruit and a good amount of acid. This wine is sexy and wild, bursting at the seems with spicy blackberry flavor and a smooth layer of vanilla. A little cloudy which in a way adds to it's wild profile. Read More

  • Gnarly Head Zinfandel Lodi Old Vine 2006

Ok, got around to drinking this nice $10 wine. A well balanced fruity Zin. Plum dominates the more muted blackberries. Not to sound like a total retard, but I also get a hint of grape. Asia (thats the other 1/2 of this wine rating duo) feels the bitterness is a bit much. Probably too heavy to drink till you're drunk, but a great meal wine. Read More
