Lodi Wine

The Lodi wine region lies in the northern portion of California’s Central Valley, which includes San Joaquin County. The eastern portions are within the Sacramento Valley, while its western parts touch on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with noticeably cooler conditions in that section.

Lodi is known for its old vine Zinfandels, with quality production from other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. One of the more exciting trends in the region is experimentation with Spanish varietals such as Tempranillo, Graciano, and Albarino and the Portuguese Verdelho. Flame Tokay had at one time been the signature grape of the region, now fallen out of favor, but still used for brandy production.

Though Lodi itself is a subregion of Central Valley, it is further divided into the following subregions:

  • Alta Mesa
  • Borden Ranch (home of Woodbridge and Sutter Home)
  • Clements Hills
  • Cosummes River

  • Michael-David Vineyards Chardonnay Lodi 7 Heavenly Chards 2006

    Snoothrank:

A fairly raw woody nose is a touch blunt. There is good acidity here but the wine needs it to balance out the sweetness. A bit of Fruit Stripes gum, artificial banana flavor on the round palate that turns a bit spicy with a bitter, pithy edge to it on the angular finish. 83pts Read More

  • Deep Purple Zinfandel Lodi Zinfandel United States California Central Valley Lodi Red 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is a 2007 Zinfandel From Deep Purple Wines in Santa Rosa, California made ... with juice sourced from the Lodi region. Typically, I could care less about the label because it really doesn't tell you anything about the wine inside the bottle. This bottle is no different, I just love the artwork becasue I'm a quasi-hippie-throwback. Once yo... Read More

  • E2 Family Winery Merlot Lodi Diabolique 2007

    Snoothrank:

*Update*It got me buzzed in 3/4 of a glass. The taste later became sickly sweet with a bitter disappointing finish. I could only stomach one glass. Two hours later I had a mild stomach ache and slight head pain.I didn't even finish the bottle and I'm an alcoholic. Roommate #2 fell asleep after asking if he could finish the bottle.Overall: Terrib... Read More

  • E2 Family Winery Merlot Lodi Diabolique 2007

    Snoothrank:

My roommate got this for me at the local grocery store. Knowing that I am a partaker of fine cheap wines, he picked up a bottle for me.Though it bears nice artwork and a cool name, I found the taste to be a little unsettling. It started with a strong smell of raspberries, but out of the bottle it smelled kind of gross.I poured a glass and swirle... Read More
