Lodi Wine

The Lodi wine region lies in the northern portion of California’s Central Valley, which includes San Joaquin County. The eastern portions are within the Sacramento Valley, while its western parts touch on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with noticeably cooler conditions in that section.

Lodi is known for its old vine Zinfandels, with quality production from other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. One of the more exciting trends in the region is experimentation with Spanish varietals such as Tempranillo, Graciano, and Albarino and the Portuguese Verdelho. Flame Tokay had at one time been the signature grape of the region, now fallen out of favor, but still used for brandy production.

Though Lodi itself is a subregion of Central Valley, it is further divided into the following subregions:

  • Alta Mesa
  • Borden Ranch (home of Woodbridge and Sutter Home)
  • Clements Hills
  • Cosummes River
  • Jahant Read more »

  • McManis Family Vineyards Zinfandel 2013

    Snoothrank:

Light powdered sugar aromas of cherry, violets and strawberry. Big bold and ripe flavors of cherry, cranberry and baking spices. Tart and fresh, this is a great sipper that is easy drinking and easy on the wallet. It has the bold acidity and flavor of a zinfandel without being overly powerful. Read More

  • Rock Face Zinfandel 2012

    Snoothrank:

Smokey and coarse on the nose with weedy aromas and raw wood, along with a big hit of fish sauce obscuring the spicy, red berry fruit. Noticeably sweet on entry, then the acids kick in and keep this fresh in the mouth, with a fine, glycerine rich slippery texture. there are some pleasant red cherry and raspberry flavors here but they are rather ... Spicy with a candied note of green herb and sweet american oak notes on the nose along with some hickory smoky, ginger and light notes of jammy black cherry fruit. A bit lacking in fruit and moderately structured with some late arriving black berry and black cherry fruit supported by well integrated toasty oak notes and some wood tannins. rather... Read More
