The Central Valley wine region of California is located east of the San Francisco Bay area, running south through the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys to Bakersfield. It is within these valleys, and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta where they meet in between, where viticulture takes place.
The hot, dry conditions of the region are prone to high yields, which is how this region became the center of California’s bulk wine production. But within some of the Valley’s subregions, a growing number of high quality wines are also in production.
Central Vallley is divided into the following subregions:
Diablo County
Fresno County
River Junction
Tracy Hills
Yolo County

  • St. Amant Zinfandel Marian's Vineyard 2012

Very attractive black plum color. Something of a sweet (caramelly) nose. Fairly jammy on the palate. Lots of blackberry/blueberry/cherry flavors make it, at least, seem sweet. Any tannins that are here, seem to be invisible. It's not hard to drink, but I could use more acid backbone. US$26,99 at Total Wine. Read More

  • Jc Van Staden Malbec Lodi 2012

Another Naked Wines offering. Have not tried a California Malbec and perhaps this one is not the one to begin with. Would have loved to have tried it with the Broquel Malbec I last had as a comparison. The JC struck me as watered down, with a thinnish red/claret somewhat transparent color as opposed to the squid ink purple opacity of the Argenti... Read More

  • Rock.Face Syrah Lodi 2012

Hard and a bit reticent on the nose with light vanilla, cedar, truffle and slightly stewy fruit aromas. Tart on entry, this is a bit light bodied in the mouth, though with plenty of structure for its size. the fruit is more in the red end of the spectrum, a bit spicy and slightly floral toned with raspberry and loganberry notes on the plate. Rea... Read More
